Located away from hues and hoes of busy towns and cities lies a small mysterious place which is known for its exquisite beauty and tranquility. Prashar Lake is a dream weekend getaway for people looking for solace. This Lake lies 50 km north of the borough of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh at a height of 2730 meters above sea level. Known for its mysteries and breathtaking landscape, Prashar Lake offers a delightful experience with snow-capped peaks, its surroundings and a three-storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to the sage Prashar.

Prashar Lake has been named after the great sage Prashar, who meditated there for a very long period and it is believed to be sacred since he is supposedly the narrator of the First Purana of the Hindu Mythology. A folktale on the lake also features a belief that the lake was formed by the Pandavas when they were returning back after Mahabharata along with their deity Kamrunag (valley is also named Kamrunag Valley after him), to provide the best place for accommodation to their guru who decided to stay at this place for isolation.  

Bhima had formed this lake by pushing his elbow and forearm on the mountain which also explains the fact why the lake is oval-shaped.



Fact about Prashar Lake: Prashar Lake has a mysterious feature that its depth has not been ascertained till date and its source is still unknown.

It is believed by the locals that this lake symbolizes the science of the Earth with the floating island, representing that the Earth is rotating on its on axis as well as moving around the lake according to the season. Its movements decide the fate of mankind, which makes it very sacred.

Fact about Prashar Lake: The circular island keeps changing its position from time to time. 

Infact about some years ago, group of scientist came with diving instrument and high tech machines to solve the mysteries of this lake, but could not reach the bottom. 

Also, the temple which was built in the 13th Century by Raja Ban Sen of Mandi, is believed to be built from a single tree. It is capped with a roof of slate tiles and wood carvings, which gives divine image to the area. Till present, people from all faiths visit this temple and throw coins into the lake. The place is full of peace, with venerable images of Gods and sage Prashar and a backdrop of snow-laden mountains.

If you are a beginner and is willing to take up hurdles, this trek offers you all in one complete package. The trek begins from Bagi, and since its inception, the trek is full of splendid views of the valley while passing through a pine forest and some open meadows. The night sky gives a very fascinating view of the area, with stars blanketed all over the place.




How to reach Prashar Lake?

The trek starts from Bagi(Baggi village) , which is well connected by road. One can easily reach Bagi through state roadways buses and private cabs. If you are travelling from any major city, the nearest airport is Kullu.

The following are two route guides from two major cities of the northern region:

  • Travel from Delhi (distance of 447 km) – Direct buses to Mandi are available. Also, one can travel by rail to Nangal Dam and then hire a cab to Mandi.
  • Travel from Chandigarh (distance of 190 km) – Direct buses to Mandi are available. Since, there is no direct rail route, the nearest station is Kiratpur Sahib and from there, cabs can be hired,



Things to pack while solving Prashar Lake Mysteries….

  • As far as trekking is considered, you must carry a comfortable pair of trekking shoes.
  • Apart from these, clothes ranging from t-shirts, jackets, trek pants, etc are required.
  • Sunglasses and caps are also recommended.
  • A medical kit is a must for contingencies.
  • Add some liquids to keep yourself hydrated after all the sweating.
  • Lastly, do not forget to pack your bags with eatables for mid-way binging.
