Seven Sisters Waterfalls in Cherrapunji

Seven Sisters Waterfalls (also known as the Nohsngithiang Falls or Mawsmai Falls) is 1 km south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills, near Cherrapunji. The Seven Sisters Waterfalls are the fourth highest waterfalls in India. Since the Waterfalls flow only during the months of the monsoon, it is recommended to tourists to visit these Falls only during the months of July to September.

Although Meghalaya is home to several of the India’s most magnificent waterfalls, the Seven Sisters Waterfall stand out, not just because of the sheer height from which the water falls, but also because of the effect of seven streams converging over a cliff to give the most splendid view of the scrubby-green hill, overlooking the great plains of Bangladesh. The look of this waterfall, with its lush, green hill, provides you with a sense of tranquil and peace like none other.

                            The Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya, are nothing short of a beautiful fusion of man-made and natural pinnacle of construction. Originally created by the Khasi tribe, the roots or the “bridges” grow from the ancient rubber trees, which are found only in the North-East India. According to locals, some of these bridges are made from roots, which are well over 500 years old. The major tourist attraction among these bridges is the Double Decker Living Root Bridges of Cherrapunji. The path to reach this particular Living Root Bridge consists of nearly 3000 stair-steps. And since the Bridges are not built, but grown naturally, the beauty of the Bridge is astounding. These indigenous architectural marvels provide a practically free alternative to wooden bridges, which get spoiled in an area receiving as much rain as Cherrapunji.

There is also an Eco-Park nearby, which serves as a picnic spot for tourists, and a viewpoint for people to see the Dainthlen Falls from. The splendid view of the waterfall, standing at a height of nearly 280 feet, is amplified by the natural beauty around it. The green bushes, the jutting rocky contour of the Hill, and the verdant trees surrounding the waterfall, all combine to give you a surreal experience of calm and serenity, as you look down upon the beautiful surroundings. The waterfall is named after a demon snake, Thlen, which according to locals, was killed on the cliff of this waterfall.

The magnificent beauty of the Kynrem Waterfall, as they tumble down from the cliff in three, visibly different steps, can be best viewed from a viewpoint situated in the Thangkharang Park nearby. Another point of interest for trekkers is, that the local guides also offer to take you through the scrubby forest, up the rocky Hill, to the trickling stream of the waterfall, with the journey offering you several wildlife experiences, such as bird-watching, and photography.
