Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple in Colombo

Run by one of Sri Lanka’s more politically adept monks, Galboda Gnanissara Thera, this bustling temple complex has a library, a museum and an extraordinarily eclectic array of bejewelled and gilded gifts presented by devotees and well-wishers over the years (plus one lonely and chained temple elephant named Ganga). Gangaramaya is the focus of the Navam Perahera on the February poya (full-moon) day each year.

"After walking around the city looking at attractions all morning it was nice to have some peaceful time at this temple. With a modest fee to enter, this location provides some peace and quiet during the otherwise hectic day. The statues and adornments are wonderful to behold, and the natural beauty enhances your sensory experience. Highly recommended."

"Feels more like an exhibit of random statues and relics in a mostly modern building, than an authentic Buddhist temple. Touristy. Plus very high "tourist tax" - entrance fee of 300 LKR for foreigners. Unethical practice that unfortunately seems rather widespread in Colombo. On the plus side - they have comfy chairs, if you want to sit down for a read."

"You really do have some unique designs to see here, but there is a compulsory donation of Rs 500 from foreigners."
