Tungabhadra River in Hampi

The Tungabhadra is one the major rivers in South India. For the majority of its route, it flows through Karnataka, before joining the Krishna river at the border of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana, and ultimately draining into the Arabian Sea. The Elephant stables of Hampi are a major tourist attraction. Though built many centuries ago, they have not lost their ability to awe people with their formidable sense of might. The Elephant stables are some of the best preserved monuments in Hampi, virtually untouched by aging over time. This was where the royal elephants used to reside during the Vijayanagara empire. Built in the 15th century, this gigantic structure boasts of intricate carvings and fine craftsmanship. It was built in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The structure proper is composed of eleven massive domed chambers, each having the capability to accommodate two fully grown elephants. The chambers were interconnected by large archway passages. The mahouts used the rear side of the chamber to enter and exit the abode of the gentle giants. Even today, it still stands as one of the most gargantuan buildings ever built in its contemporary era. It is definitely worth a visit here.

The Matanga Hill is the most elevated point in Hampi. The top of the hill offers a breathtaking aerial view of the Hampi city. Located at just 1 kilometre from Hampi Bus stand, the northern face overlooks the Tungabhadra River. This hill is a definite trekker’s paradise, with no defined road or directions to the top. The Matanga Hill is said to have been important in Ramayana. The prince of Kishkinda, Vali was cursed by sage Mathanga, not being able to set foon on the hill. Today it is a photographer’s paradise, where you can see people armed with DSLRs, trying to capture the landscape in their lenses. On the top of hill stands the Veerbhadra Temple. The Achyuta Raya temple and the Kodanda Temple are some of the other major attractions around the hill. The sunsets look absolutely magnificent from up there. It is advisable to carry a torch if one is planning to stay after sunset. Visiting here is a no-brainer.

Hazara Rama Temple in Hampi

The Hazara Rama Temple, or the ‘Thousand Rama Temple’, is a historical temple based in the ancient city of Hampi. The temple owes it name to the numerous panels of carving of the events which happened in Ramayana. Walls and pillars of the temple depict the story of Ramayana. This temple is considered to be the private temple to royalty of Vijayanagara empire. The Hazara Rama temple faces a sprawling lawn on its north side. The outer walls of the temple are decorated with bas-relics of Krishna and Ram. There are two huge gates, which give entry into the premises. The presence of three empty pedestals infer that the idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana once stood there. This temple is the finest example of the skilled craftsmanship of temple’s contemporary artisans. Even today, the structure has hardly been affected over the course of time.
