Indian Astronomical Observatory

The Indian Astronomical Observatory is situated at an altitude of 4500 m Atop Mt. Saraswati in the vast Nilamkhul Plain in the Hanle Valley of Changthang, Ladakh (4250m above the sea level) with the ancient Hanle monastery as its nearest neighbour. It is one of the world’s highest sites for optical infrared and Gamma ray telescope. It is located about a 10 hour drive from Leh.
The observatory is equipped with the Himalayan Chandra telescope and a high altitude gamma ray telescope.
