                        “I wouldnt write too much about the fort and history as I think others have already well covered it. If you are coming from Pune side, there are couple interesting routes you can take which roadies would certainly appreciate. 1) Hit on old highway, about an 5-7 kms after your first toll, keep looking for kamshet-pavananagar road, cross the borr ghat , enroute visit Bedse caves and reach lohgad. 2) From chandni chowk, take the mulshi road, cross the ghotawade Phata then come to paud Phata and turn right near the market you should be on the Kolvan Road now keep going straight and you will find Pavna dam on your left go little further and you should be at Lohagad”

The place is quite popular among trekkers who come here for one day tryst with nature and history. Situated at a height of 3400 ft, Lohagad Fort is a formidable fort about 52 km away from Pune. Ideal time to visit Lohgad would be in the winter season. Lohgad is one of the best forts to visit during any time of the year. Built in the 18th century, it makes for an ideal destination for trekking and nature lovers, especially from Pune and Mumbai. The trek to the fort is an easy one and perfect for the first timers. The place is flanked by nature at its best, lush green grassland, panoramic views and cool mountain air. Located at a drive of 1 km is its twin fort called Visapur Fort, which is also one of the popular trekking spots. If you are seeking a light adventure, the place holds the perfect solution.

The panoramic view from top of lohagad fort is marvellous and spectacular. The highlight of the trek is Vinchukata (Scorpion’s tail). It looks like a scorpion’s tail and hence the name. The trek passes through charming little villages. Waving to the passing villagers along the way or having bread with them is altogether a different experience. You can check out the ancient but well preserved Bhaje caves nearby.

                            The Bhaja caves are among the oldest caves in India and date back all the way to 160 B.C. The Bhaja caves are believed to have existed from the times of Hinayana phase of Buddhism, which is of 2nd to 1st century BC. This Cave is the largest Hinayana Buddhist chaitya temple in India Travel back in time on this trip to ancient Indian rock-cut caves with the best rock-cut architecture of all times. The Bhaja caves are sited amidst green surroundings and there is also a spectacular waterfall near the cave where visitors can refresh themselves with a dip. Lohagad and Visapur forts are not far from these caves. Beyond this is a unique cluster of 14 stupas, five inside and nine outside a smaller cave. Bhaja Cave was built during Satavahana’s rule and is a perfect example of rock-cut architecture. For people wanting to explore and learn interesting architecture, Bhaja caves are the perfect place to visit.

                            Duke’s Nose earlier reckoned as Nagphani is a cliff at Khandala. The Cliff is pointed like a snakes pointed head portion or hood and hence the name Nagphani. The name Duke’S nose is derived as the cliff looked like the shape of the Duke. This is a marvelous picnic spot nearby Lonavala. To reach the Duke’s nose, highly adventurous trekking spirit is essential and the view of the downhill plains from this point is mind boggling. Duke’s Nose or Nagphani appears almost inaccessible, but it is a surprisingly simple trek to reach the summit from the southern approach. Great views of Khandala and the surrounding Sahyadri peaks as well as amazing views of the Mumbai-Pune road and rail corridors are rewarded to the trekker. Duke’s Nose is a convenient day trip from either Mumbai or Pune and the trekking route starts also very conveniently near the Khandala. The nature’s beauty is at its best here.

                            The Tiger’s leap is one of the most popular points, also known as ‘Waghdari’ is a cliff-top with a sheer drop of over 650 m, offering a wide view of the hills. The resemblance of the shape of place with that of a tiger leaping into the valley is reason of an unusual name given to this place as Tiger’s Leap. Tiger’s Leap is around 8 km away from Lonavala and a major tourist attraction of this place. It is a cliff top offering a comprehensive view of the hills and the Western Ghats. This point, which provides an interesting view of the valley below, is just a short distance away from INS Shivaji. The exhilarating views should, however, be enjoyed from a safe spot rather than from the top of the cliff which is precarious. The echo point on Tiger’s Leap is another major fascination. A stream also flows nearby making it a much-frequented place of couples and groups. You can also take your picnic bag here and light a bonfire in the winter evenings. Many tourists come to this location for indulging in adventurous activities like river rafting and trekking.
