St. Francis Church

St. Francis Church in Kochi

It is the oldest church built by Europeans in India. On his 3rd visit to Kerala, Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese trader who reached India from Europe by sea, fell ill and died in Kochi. He was buried in the St. Francis Church. Later his remains were taken back to Portugal. In spite of that, his burial spot inside the church has been clearly marked out.

"This Church is denominationally under the Church of South India (CSI). Vasco da Gama was originally buried here, but remains shifted later. But his grave is there within the precints.A 'must visit' place in Kochi."

"This is the St Francis Church of Fort Kochi. And also called the Vasco da Gamma Church. Aptly named because Vasco da Gamma, the famous Portuguese explorer is apparently buried in this church itself! The church itself is relatively small place and isn't too majestic in design. One can understand, as this is the oldest European church in India. The church is located very near to Fort Kochi beach, and is easily accessible. Worth the visit for the historical value, and there isn't a reason not to visit, it's right near the end of Princess street itself."
