Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple

#Temple in Kumarakom

One of the elegant sights associated with the temple festivals of Kerala is the 'Ezhara Ponnana' procession held during the annual festival at Ettumanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam. 'Ezhara' means seven-and-half and 'Ponnana' means golden elephant. Each of the seven elephants is two feet high and the eighth one is of one foot only. Hence they are together called seven-and-half elephants.

These elephants were offered to the deity by the then ruler of Travancore, Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma. The Ezhara Ponnana procession is a memorable spectacle to behold on the eighth and tenth day of the festival at Ettumanoor.

"One of the best temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord Siva. Wonderful ambience and never too crowded. You get to stand in front of the sanctum sanctorum for as long as you want without being pushed around and being asked to move. Very conveniently located. My mum's favourite Lord Siva temple. Hara Hara Maha Deva!!!"

"Ettumanoor mahadeva temple is the next stop from the Ettumanoor KSRTC stand. This is a famous shiva temple in Ettumanoor . It is very easy to reach the temple and return back to our home from there. Here the main deity is shiva. We can see Ayappan and other deities here like Ganapathi, Yakshiamma, Nagaraja... . A lot of myths about this temple. We can see the "ugra moor thi " of shivan there. This is an ancient temple. So we can see a lot of art works on the walls of the "Shreekovil" and it is said that these crafts work are about 500 years old . Foreigners visit the temple regularly to get the blessings and to know the culture prevailed here. I think now you also like to visit the temple. Then why you are wasting time. Get ready and go soon. My friends who are from different religions like Christians come here regularly to worship the God and get blessings from them. I think we are rather slow in this area than them to take decisions. "

"The shrine in this temple is of Shiva who is in 'Thandava' state. He is very powerful. If anyone pray here with full dedication, his prayer will be definitely heard. God bless.. My house is just 3km away from the temple."
