Silent Valley National Park in Palakkad

The Silent Valley National Park rises abruptly to the Nilgiri Plateau in the North and overlooks the plains of Mannarkkad in the South. Extremely fragile, a unique preserve of tropical evergreen rain forests which is a veritable nursery of flora and fauna, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

The National Park is the core of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Despite its name, the Silent Valley (the clamour of Cicadas is conspicuously absent here) is a rich storehouse of biodiversity. It is a true Garden of Eden for students of life sciences, professional scientists and field biologists.

"Silent Valley National Park ( സൈലന്‍റ് വാലീ നാഷണല്‍ പാര്‍ക്ക്), is a national park with a core zone of 236.74 square kilometres (91 sq mi) (making it the largest national park in Kerala). It is located in the Nilgiri Hills, within the Palakkad District of Kerala, South India. This region was explored in 1847 by the botanist Robert Wight, and is a setting for the epic Mahabharatha. This park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forests and tropical moist evergreen forest in India. We spotted many varieties of butterflies, Malabar squirrel, lion tailed monkey, langoor monkey! Watch tower view is just awesome! Do the trek as well. No food available, so please pack good amount of food. Drive from Palakkad takes good 3 hours. Jeep ride is chilling a bit rain adds to it! Carry salt to work around leeches! One step closer to nature. Drivers are very friendly. Can reserve the jeep rides in advance thru phone! "
