Sanchi Stupa in Sanchi

The Buddhist vihara at Sanchi, famous for its Great Stupa is located at Sanchi Town.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi is the oldest stone structure in India and was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. "The Sanchi Stupa is one of the best preserved heritages of India and also of the world. Emperor Ashoka erected this Stupa in order to spread Buddhism. The various carvings on the stones signifies the episodes and miracles from Lord Buddha's life and events as depicted in the Jataka tales. Its so quiet and peaceful that you can spend hours roaming inside the campus area."

"Its really awesome to visit the ancient stupas at Sanchi. The scenic beauty of the place is really mesmerizing. I was amazed to see the stupas architecture. It was stupendous & adorable. I wonder how the workers, who built the stupas, would have managed to lift those rocks up to the hill at that time. I felt so calm and composed when i entered the place. The atmosphere around the stupas is magnificent. I suggest every traveller to visit the stupas at sanchi, which contains the relics of gautam buddha, at least once. You'll feel very satisfied after you come back from there. "

"Still as quite as it would have been 2300 years ago. Beautiful Stupas. The monastery remains clearly show how simple the lives of the monks would have been. Squirrels and birds, very high in numbers."
