Thommanon temple

Thommanon temple in Temples of Angkor

Thommanon temple is dedicated to Brahmanism. Temple is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. The temple is rectangular in plan with a sanctuary opening to the east, a moat and a rampart with two gopuras, one on the east and another on the west, and one library near the south-east of the wall. Only traced of a laterite base of the wall remain. The beauty and success of Thommanon was almost certainly a major source of inspiration for the architects of Angkor Wat. In the 1960’s, the temple was the focus of a meticulous restoration project. As a result, some extremely fine examples of Khmer artwork, hieroglyphs, and architecture can be viewed at Thommanon.

"This is a small temple that you can see in about ten minutes or so. The most important features are not the overall design but the carved decorations. They are in a relatively good condition and give you a sense of how things would have looked at some of the less-preserved sites."
