Built by Dodda Vira Rajendra, the then king of Kodagu empire in 18 century is a historical marvel unraveling the marvels of artisans of that time. It is a hunting lodge of the royal family built at the foothills of Tadiyandamol peak. The palace is located in Kakkabe and has various camping sites nearby. The palace is 40 km from Madikeri and can be easily visited in between the trek. It does not take much time to explore Nalakunad Palace as some of its parts are damaged due to neglect for so many years. Nalakunad palace is a monument of historical importance and attracts people for its explicit aura of simplicity.
The visiting hours of Nalakunad Palace exceed from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The courtyard is embellished with intricate wood carvings, ancient paintings, and faded murals that display the fine talent of artisans. Though the palace is in bad condition it does not stop reflecting the aura of royalty through these pieces of evidence. The conical roofs, crested dome, pillared facade, and courtyard with statues of four bulls all are enchanted with the bliss of royalty. The whole palace is made of wood and iron making it strong enough to withstand nature for so long.
