Central Asian Museum Leh in Leh

One of Leh’s most remarkable buildings, this tapered four-storey stone tower is a 21st-century construction based on a historic Lhasa mansion, with the added flourish of a fortress-style drawbridge. Inside, exhibits are relatively limited but the top floor Faces of Ladakh mini-photoessays are thought-provoking.

The museum hides in a courtyard that also contains Leh’s oldest mosque, a traditionally styled Ladakhi show-kitchen and a small exhibition hall. Sadly, a dispute between the land owners and the fund that built the museum means access can prove tricky. There are even rumours that the whole structure could be demolished to create a shopping centre. So see it while you can. Even from the outside the site is worth a look.

                            The Zanskar River is a north-flowing tributary of the Indus. In its upper reaches, the Zanskar has two main branches. Lower (northern) sections of that gorge are popular in summer with tourists making rafting trips, typically from Chiling to Nimmu. In winter when the road to Zanskar is closed by snow on the high passes, the only overland route to Padum is by walking along the frozen river, a multi-day hike that is now sold as an adventure activity called the Chadar (‘ice sheet’) Trek.

You can reach here after a roundabout journey covering a small portion of KhardungLa pass road. Other way to Leh Namgyal Monastery is short trek and the views are worth it. You can walk to the monastery from Leh Palace up a winding track. The trek is pretty steep and high that will also help to get acclimatize with the weather.

The magnetic hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill when put in neutral gear and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference. However, the reality behind this supernatural effect is an optical illusion. The layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope, because of the obstructed horizon.

Visiting the Memorial is a gesture of respect for the souls of Indian army men.. The museum in this war memorial exhibits army emblems, model of Himalyan Mountain Range and documents archive. The Hall of Fame houses a lot of photographs, weapons, memorabilia and stories of the encounters of so many brave-hearts who lost their lives and became martyrs, to the cause of the freedom of the country. The walls have the name of the soldiers who sacrificed in the war. Other articles such as wallets, letters and other items recovered are also on display.

The entrance to this fort is through a wooden bridge and inside the fort there are stables for horses and barracks for the men. There also resides a temple and a mosque which were also built by Gen Zorawar Singh. currently this fort is under the control of the Indian Army and there is a museum inside dedicated to General Zorawar.

The museum hides in a courtyard that also contains Leh’s oldest mosque, a traditionally styled Ladakhi show-kitchen and a small exhibition hall. Sadly, a dispute between the land owners and the fund that built the museum means access can prove tricky. There are even rumours that the whole structure could be demolished to create a shopping centre. So see it while you can. Even from the outside the site is worth a look.
