The Mysore Palace was the official residence of the Wodeyars, who ruled Mysore from 1399 to 1950. Built by King Krishnarajendra Wadiyar IV, the Mysore Palace is one of the most visited tourist destinations, only second to Taj Mahal. Located in the very centre, the entire Mysore city seems to have been built around the Palace. The original structure of the Palace, composed of wood was burnt down completely. The present building was built in 1912, and incorporated all the architectural styles it could. It is a mixture of Hindu, Muslim, Rajput and Gothic styles, commonly known as Indo-Saracenic style. The marble domes cap off the three storied palace, along with a five storied tower. The body of the palace is carved exquisitely with precision and finesse. The palace houses notable and priceless works of arts and crafts from all over the world. Today, the Mysore Palace acts a museum, with every exhibit up for display. The Mysore Palace is truly a legacy of the might and creativity of medieval India.

Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysore Zoo was developed by Chamaraja Wadiyar Bahadur, the sovereign in 1892. It was initially called as the Palace Zoo as it was in the King’s palace covering 10 acres of land. It was then expanded to 45 acres thus becoming one of the oldest zoological gardens in India. Though it is 100 years old, it is maintained and managed systematically. It is a home to diverse flora and fauna. King Chamaraja collected rare and different animal and bird species in his tours in exchange for local breeding animals. Mysore Zoo is the only zoo in India breeding African Elephants. The environment and the vegetation in the zoo is ideal for the animals breeding there. Endangered species are also sheltered carefully in the zoo. One must definitely visit this place to see different species from all over the world.
