Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram

The second longest sea bridge in India, the Pamban Bridge was the only transportation link to the mainland in the earlier times. It is a major tourist attraction, leaving tourists open mouthed when the two leaves of the bridge open up to let ships pass through. The ravelling bridge is a combo of road and rail bridges- a massive architectural marvel. The bridge is constructed across the Pamban River and hence called as the Pamban Bridge. Local people fondly refer to it as the Pamban Palam. It stands erect and in grandeur after withstanding various storms and highly damaging cyclones. A spectacular view of the Rameshwaram Island from the bridge is promised to the tourists. On the other side you can see the vast expanse of blue waters coinciding with the blue and white hues of the sky.

Located at the tip of Rameshwaram is the abandoned town of Dhanushkodi, once an important and renowned trading hub. It was once a pitstop for most people travelling to Rameshwaram and to the devotees of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. The crumbled walls of the city now stands as a remainder of the 1964 cyclone. Legend has it that Lord Rama on his way back to Rameshwaram after rescuing Sita was advised by Vibhishana to destroy the bridge. Rama broke the bridge with only one end of his bow hence the name Dhanushkodi. However the entire town stands in ruins today with no means of civilisation. The town is gaining popularity as a tourist attraction with its pristine beaches, rumbled structures and tales of spooky events. The deserted beach is perfect for long peaceful walks with the Gulf of Munnar Marine National part to entertain you.

A holy temple in the pilgrim town of Rameshwaram is the Ramanathaswamy Temple, welcoming all Lord Shiva devotees. The temple is the main reason the town is well known to all Hindu followers. The temple has a detailed Dravidian style of architecture covering all nuances. There are two prominent lingas inside the temple. The linga made of sand called Ramalinga and the Viswalingam, believed to have been installed by Lord Rama. The word tirtham translates to holy water bodies and it is considered that a dip in these holy water bodies will cleanse your mind and soul. The waters of the Agnitheertham are considered to me equivalent to the holy waters of the Ganges in North India. This pilgrimage centre is where people travel to immerse the ashes of their near and dear ones. There is a wide belief that losing your life in the holy town is sure to take you to heaven. This is one of the major sections of the temple where tourists are buzzing around the holy water tank. The Agnitheertham is a mandatory place of visit for any pilgrim in Rameshwaram.
