Shey is only a half an hour’s drive away from Leh. Shey turned out to be a lush green plain dotted with white chortens visible far out in the distance, that appears as a vivid contrast as compare to the mountain landscapes of the Leh city. Shey got its name as a distortion of ‘Shell’, which means mirror, a name inspired by the Shey lake.

The Shey Palace is situated at altitude of around 11204 ft on the way to Thiske and Hemis Gompa about 15 kms away from Leh. It was built in the year 1665 by the King of Ladakh as a summer retreat. Shey is the ancient capital of Ladakh. The palace is located on a hill top and has a victory stupa made of pure gold. It was the home of the Royal family till 1834 after which they moved to the Stok palace. The wooden carvings on the windows are intricate and detailed. There are a number of options available for accommodation around the palace. There are a few dhabas as well. The palace entrance has a souvenir shop selling collectibles.

The Shey Lake is a small artificial water body which is surrounded by lush green fields It is a fenced lake and is situated infront of the hill where Shey palace is situated.It has various types of fishes and birds that were introduced here by the monks. Shey, meaning “looking glass” derives it’s name from this pond which reflects the Shey palace in it’s waters. The beautiful surroundings and the lush greens and the backdrop of the Himalayas near this pond provide the perfect destination for nature lovers and travelers alike.
