Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga is one of the 12 jyotirlingas, sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the religious city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. This shrine is worshipped as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethams ( Holy places of cosmic power ).

The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known as “Dakshinamurti” , which means facing south, it is the only idol among the 12 jyotirlingams to be facing south. According to the hindu scriptures, Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga is one of the main Ujjain attractions for pilgrims, it is said that the lingam was formed on its own from the powers of the lord and his consort, goddess Parvati. Devotees who visit this place can feel a sense of tranquillity and peace that resides here. One must visit the temple before sunrise for the famous ‘Bhasma Aarti’.
