A good kayak life jacket should be comfortable, durable and offer plenty of flotation. You also want a life jacket that won’t get in the way or impede your paddling. Look for a life jacket with adjustable straps and padding in the back and shoulders for a comfortable fit. Many kayak life jackets also have zippered pockets for storing small items.
When choosing a kayak life jacket, consider the type of kayaking you’ll be doing. For example, if you’ll be paddling in rough waters or whitewater, you’ll need a different life jacket than if you’re just going to be cruising around on calm lakes. Whitewater kayakers need a life jacket that’s designed to keep them afloat in rapids and provide plenty of movement so they can paddle effectively. Touring and recreational kayakers need a more versatile life jacket that’s comfortable to wear all day and won’t restrict their movement. Once you’ve found the perfect kayak life jacket, make sure it fits properly. Most jackets have adjustable straps that allow you to tighten or loosen the fit as needed. And always test your life jacket in shallow water before heading out onto deep waters – this will give you a chance to make sure it stays snugly in place and provides adequate flotation.
Kayak Life Jackets # 1) NRS Clearwater Kayak Lifejacket (PFD)

Product Summary: The Clearwater Mesh Back Personal Floatation Device is a foundational front-entry PFD that is built with high-back flotation to accommodate most kayak seats. 400D nylon ensures durability through seasons of wear and tear, no matter how many times you capsize or get snagged on passing branches.
A 5-Star Review: The mesh back does two things: ventilation, and lets you sit back in a rec kayak without the pfd riding up. I really like the bright blue. Two things that keep this from being a 5 for me: the adjustable shoulder straps are just soooo long! I guess my torso may be really short, but I have a long pieces of strap flapping around. I know I can fix that. Just sayin! Second, I guess to keep the level of flotation a class III, the front has a big bulge of flotation. The back has enough flotation at the head level, even without any lower on the back. I have had a lot of different pfds over the years–Lola, Astral–and none of them had this bulky lower front flotation. Still, I like this pfd for flat water paddling.
Kayak Life Jackets # 2) Zeraty Adult Life Jacket Swim Vest Buoyancy Aid Jacket PFD for Fishing Sailing Surfing Boating Kayaking for Water Sports

Product Summary: The Zeraty Adult Life Jacket Swim Vest is a buoyancy aid jacket that is perfect for fishing, sailing, surfing, boating, and kayaking. This life jacket is made from high-quality materials and is designed to provide maximum comfort and safety while you enjoy your water sports activities. The Zeraty Adult Life Jacket Swim Vest comes with a adjustable waist belt and leg straps for a secure and comfortable fit, and also features a durable zipper closure. This life jacket also has two large front pockets and two side pockets for storing your belongings while you’re out on the water.
A 5-Star Review: I’m 5’11, 205 lbs and I took a chance on this despite being too heavy for the recommendations. Although it may not be able to keep me above water on it’s own(untested), it’s very roomy and does not inhibit my kayaking movements at all. I’ll update once I find out if it can keep me afloat on it’s own.
A Critical Review: I wear it kayaking but it rides up and ends up around your throat
Kayak Life Jackets # 3) Onyx Kayak Fishing Life Jacket

Product Summary: The Onyx Kayak Fishing vest is feature-rich but yet a great value! Designed with four different pocket designs and functions to hold your essential gear and keep you fishing longer. In addition to the zippered fleece-lined pockets and the zippered chest pocket, radios or pliers can slip down and clamp to the pocket/vest through the opening at the top of the pocket, to keep them easily accessible. The one-button push drop down tray pocket holds a small tackle box. The six adjustment straps can be adjusted up or down depending on your activity or the heights of the boat seat or kayak. The high back of the vest does not get in the way of the seats and has mesh for breathability. Universal size fits 30″-52″ chest. Oversize fits 45″-65″ chest. U.S. Coast Guard Approved.
A 5-Star Review: This seems to be a very nice PFD. They say this is a Level 3 Coast guard approved Life preserving jacket. According to the USCG, most people need at least 7-12 lbs of lift pressure from a floatation device to stay above water. The onyx says that is around 15lbs of lift pressure which exceeds the standard for the Level 3. That is good to know.
I will be using this PFD for Kayaking, and it will be perfect for every aspect of these adventures! I love all the pockets that is has. I also really like rubber band type of connection point on the left chest. This area can accommodate a lot of different ideas, and so I find it be extremely flexible in the use. This pfd even has a pocket on both sides that have felt lining in it. If you are like me, and enjoy kayaking even in cooler weather, the pockets will be a nice place to warm up the fingers a bit. This pfd seems so versatile in its use, I couldn’t imagine all the possibilities it would provide, but there are a few cons.
It seems that the zipper pulls are a flexible plastic. When I go to zip the pfd, I can feel the zipper pull bending under little pressure. This makes me believe that in a short amount of time it will break. The most concerning is that the actual component that forces the two sides of the zipper to join, also feels to be made of this plastic. That, to me, is unacceptable, and a corner that should not have been cut. Never, ever skimp on a zipper, as we all have too many struggles with zippers as it is. Additionally, for the price point, it should have been some type of strong aluminum, or a stainless stell, I don’t know. When you go to tighten this guy down, it does put pull on that zipper. I could be wrong and I’ll figure out as the months go by, how well that hols up.
Now, I am a BIG fan of double stitching and all aspects of pockets and compartments are single stitched. That may be perfectly fine, but it doesn’t appear that the zipper, which handles the pressure of keeping the jacket tight, does NOT have double stitching, or I can’t see it. However, as in one of my pictures, it does appear they made great effort to ensure a strong additional stitching was done where all of the nylon type straps connect to the vest. The vest can be a bit bulky, feeling like 2 inches thick in spots, but then again, you DO want to stay afloat. The design is nice, in that it allows you to move with freedom when paddling which is what I am looking for.
So all in all, it suits my needs. I wanted all the pockets for accessories, and I wanted the design to allow me to move freely. They have accomplished this. I am concerned of the build strength in the zipper, and hope it lasts longer than I am expecting. As it stands, I would certainly recommend the PFD!
A Critical Review: Researched and got this jacket as it had pockets necessary for radio and GPS plus taking notes. It had a good mesh and the works including warm pockets … but then came the critical flaws. There are many reviews with the good stuff you can read.
Life jackets are primarily designed to save lives – making it critical that they a) fit well and snug to float you and B) the harness/ fasteners must be strong enough for the rescue team to lift an unconscious person out of the water. Be it swimming pool, lake or open water – that function is basic.
This life jacket lacks that part. The only fastener is a zip which is not advisable to lift a person from – even a kayak spill. The zipper is tricky to put on as there is a very thick internal float where it comes together. The zipper gets stuck very often as it is poorly located and designed and pulls on the fabric every other time you try to put it on.
There is no secondary fall back – normally lifejackets have 3 binding straps in addition ot a zipper if there is one – this one has zero straps – so in case you fall in or get the zipper (which does not lock) loose or entangled, the jacket will be useless.
The fastener flaw makes this a critical no-go even for recreational use if you are a not a strong swimmer
Thus returned
Kayak Life Jackets # 4) Old Town Canoes & Kayaks Old Town Lure Angler Men’s PFD / Life Jacket

Product Summary: The Lure Angler PFD/Life Jacket is designed for the comfort and safety of the serious fisherman. It is made of durable materials with plenty of pockets and gear loops to keep all of your tackle and gear within reach. The jacket also has a built-in rain cover and an adjustable waist to ensure a snug and comfortable fit.
A 5-Star Review: I really love this PFD so far for my kayak fishing and touring adventures. It’s pretty comfortable and seems to fit as expected. It’s not overly bulky but provides decent storage. In fact, you’re probably not doing it right if you need more storage options than this provides haha. My only gripe is the top straps need a bit more velcro as they flop around a bit if you’re not the exact size to keep them at the exact length. I am keeping my eye on the single stitched storage compartments, especially at the bottom of the pocket, as I know other designs always seem to slowly come apart at these areas. Also, please be aware this is only a Type III PFD which is not guaranteed to keep your face out of the water if you are unconscious. Read up on the different PFD types and usage before making your purchase decision. For me, this was fine for inshore and slightly offshore where rescue was fairly quick or when paddling with a buddy. Never trust the inflatable type PFD’s to auto inflate…so this was a great option to know it would keep me reasonably safe. Function over form I always say…but this one looks great too.
Update: This lifejacket only has one tiny little plastic ring to attach nippers/forceps, etc. It really needs a better/stronger shoulder loop and chest loop to attach your VHF radio.
A Critical Review: It look nice,it is very comfortable, but I tried it in the water ,and it doesn’t matter what position I was example :on my back, side ,up right or upside-down, upside down it didn’t turn me over results I would have drown./Up right, it plunged me in to the water face down and I would have drown and die,/Chest up and motionless this jacket set my body straight and face back forward in to the water, conclusion, this is a death PFD if you pass out in the water, and very unsafe, I believe a life savings would be the primary goal of this PFD ,but is not doing it!!!!! ,this PDF will do everything it can to sink your mouth ,nose and half of your head in to the water ! if you are not in control of your self! This is very scary, I was exited at first Like everyone else, but tell everyone else to do this test and you will see.

Kayak Life Jackets # 8) NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD)

Product Summary: The NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD) is the world’s best-selling lifejacket for kayak anglers offering all of the organization and attachment points needed for your fishing accessories. Not only is it designed to make you more effective on the water, the comfort simply can’t be beat. Features: – The NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD) is the world’s best-selling lifejacket for kayak anglers offering all of the organization and attachment points needed for your fishing accessories. – Not only is it designed to make you more effective on the water, the comfort simply can’t be beat. – The NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD) is made of high-quality materials that are water resistant and durable. – The NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD) features adjustable straps and a comfortable fit.
A 5-Star Review: I ordered NRS Chinook Fishing PFD (Red, XS/M). I’m 5’5″ and 145 lbs and the size fits me perfectly. I can move my hands forward and backward without any constraints or restrictions. I can turn around my upper body on the sides and didn’t feel any constraints or restrictions as well. I think I should be able to row and fish without any problems.
I also tested the safety it will provide me just in case I fall over from the kayak into the water. I did my testing in a swimming pool. I did the test from three possible positions from which I could fall from the kayak and into the water i.e., sitting, kneeling and standing positions. The possible falls that I did were: 1) falling on my side; 2) falling backward with back of the head into the water; and 3) falling forward face down into the water.
1) falling on my side – after the fall on the water and not moving, my upper body slowly turned upside with my face facing the sky. This will allow me to be able to regain consciousness and breath if it so happens I fall on side and losing consciousness.
2) falling backward with back of the head into the water – after the fall, my body assumed a straight position. My lower body, from the waist down to my feet started to float upward and my body assumed a semi-supine position and my face facing the sky. This will allow me to be able to regain consciousness and breath if it so happens I fall on side and losing consciousness.
3) falling forward face down into the water – after the fall, my body assumed a straight position. My lower body, from the waist down to my feet started to float upward and my body assumed an upside-down position with my face facing and into the water. If I fell down into this position and lost my consciousness, there’s a probably that I might drown since my face is in the water. My body turned downside-up i.e., my face is facing the sky, only if I raise my head up. When I raised my head, my upper body turned to the side and up facing the sky allowing me to breath. Hopefully something can be done better in the PFD in case somebody fall face down into the water and lost consciousness.
Overall, the PFD did its job ( as long as you don’t lose consciousness during the fall 🙂 )
A Critical Review: Love the NRS brand and their Chinook PFD specifically. When trying to replace my current L/XL I decided to purchase another L/XL. Who knew they changed their chest dimensions at some point and now the L/XL is too large. Went from 38”-46” to 42”-52”. Nowhere in the product description was there a size chart, so I had no reason to suspect this. Returned.
Kayak Life Jackets # 9) NRS Ninja Kayak Lifejacket (PFD)

Product Summary: The NRS Ninja Kayak Lifejacket is a cutting edge PFD that offers a great fit, superb comfort and incredible freedom of movement. It‘s designed to give the serious kayaker everything they need and nothing they don‘t. The NRS Ninja uses a totally new design that incorporates a super–light shell fabric and low–profile hardware to keep the weight down and the bulk to a minimum. But don‘t let the minimalist design fool you, the NRS Ninja still offers plenty of features including a large front pocket, lash tabs and reflective accents.
A 5-Star Review: This lifejacket seems great. I love how it is low profile so it doesnt get in your way of your arms. Because it is low profile it is thicker than your average lifejacket but that is probably because it needs to be since its smaller. I like the pocket in front and the hand warmers. However, I did end up returning it and going with the Astral, Ceiba Life Jacket instead. Where this jacket sits on my abdomen, causes me a bit of discomfort but keep in mind due to a few medical conditions I have any kind of pressure on certain areas of my abdomen cause me pain. Even when I tried to loosen the straps it still just didn’t feel as comfortable as the Astral. I also like how the Astral goes on like a jacket where you zip and connect one strap whereas the Ninja you have to put over your head and then connect 2 straps on the side – it made it a bit clumsier to put on. Overall, if this is comfortable for you, I think its great especially for those who paddle and want more arm swing without scaping on the jacket. I didnt try in the water. Also, they don’t offer free returns and you have to print the label. Not very convenient.
A Critical Review: This is a very nice PFD, but it’s super chunky in the front and back, which was very uncomfortable in my high backed kayak seat with lumbar support. It would be great with a back band or low seat, however. The hand warmer in the front is awesome and it’s loaded with pockets and features. Very well made, though not super forgiving on your boobs since it’s pretty rock hard. Just think twice if your seats are higher, that’s all. I purchased a Stohlquist Flo instead. Not nearly as low profile, but definitely fits my seat with zero hinderance, and it’s anatomically made for a woman’s body.

Product Summary: The Fisherman is a great choice for anyone looking for a well-rounded cockpit management system. The dual front-mounted tool pockets are perfect for storing small items, and the fold-down workstations make it easy to get to your tools when you need them.
A 5-Star Review: I was able to wear it over an extended fishing trip and it was comfortable the whole time. Plenty of room for movement, practical storage, and breathable.
A Critical Review: It’s a great fishing kayak vest for a male 😀 but it doesn’t fit the female anatomy on top.

A 5-Star Review: Exactly the same product as sold in big box stores but at 1/2 their price
A Critical Review: Received the vests today and was a bit surprised about the quality. We initially purchased the red and decided to exchange it for the orange to match our bags. The red was very good quality and all looks in order. These have spots and random “dirt or stains” on them. The fabric was also a bit shabby compared to the red. Some stitches are way off line. We don’t want to return them just yet since we needed them for an upcoming kayak trip. This definitely is a quality control issue. We hope they hold up for a day trip or they’re going back to seller.
UPDATE: Fabric started to rip away from stitch after single use. See photo. RETURNED.

A 5-Star Review: Fits well. So many pockets I forget where stuff is at. Comfortable. NO USCG approval stamp for use as a floatation device.
A Critical Review: It would be ok if it were USCG approved, which it is NOT and therefore not legal in Maine and probably not in other states.

A 5-Star Review: I was turned away by the price but I now think it is worth the price. I picked this one because this seems like it has more padding for floating compare to the other minimalist, sporty ones, although I believe life jackets need to have certain buoyancy, but you can take a look at others and see what I mean.
The pockets is small (not waterproof) but I can insert the phone pouch so it doesn’t swing around when paddling. I inserted a bottle of sun screen in the other pocket.
It is very comfortable, I cannot notice it after it is on. It also insulate from the heat of the sun. All the straps and hardware and is quality made.
A Critical Review: Good fit. High back. Need to wait for warmer weather.

Kayak Life Jackets # 18) NRS Women’s Siren Kayak Lifejacket (PFD)

Product Summary: Made for basic paddling on flat to mild water, the Siren Personal Floatation Device from NRS provides us with excellent flotation without compromising our range of motion for chill days on the water. This women’s-specific PFD features a six-panel design for increased comfort and paddling performance. Reflective accents offer low-light visibility, and AirMesh inner panels increase airflow to keep you cool.
A 5-Star Review: This PFD is the best I have ever owned. It is very well designed, very well made, and super-comfortable. What I love about it is the fact that it does not impede my paddling strokes whatsoever, as it allows my arms the freedom of movement that my old jacket didn’t. The fact that it is so comfortable makes it more likely that I will actually wear it, even on easy flat-water paddles, rather than just throw it in the bottom of my canoe (like I often did with my old one.) It has lots of flotation that is well-placed, yet it is not bulky at all. …Very well designed, and high-quality. I purchased one for my wife as well, and she loves hers too. You won’t be disappointed!
A Critical Review: I tried it on and ended up returning it. It was bigger and bulkier than I anticipated. I am 5’6” and 140 lbs. and it was longer on me than I wanted and I really had to since the straps. I realized I wouldn’t wear it much and because it doesn’t zip up, it’s not a great option for just strapping to my SUP. I ended up getting an NRS a inflatable belt instead.
Quality is good, just wasn’t right for me.

A 5-Star Review: This is my second one. I had 3 back surgeries and gained a bit too much weight to fit into the other one had to buy a new one. I love the cut out back design so you’re not pushed forward when you’re paddling.

A 5-Star Review: I wanted a bright orange color PFD for use in my fishing boat. I have another style PFD made by this company that I wear when I’m in my kayak, so I was confident in the quality and fit of this brand. A little pricey, but should perform well. I’m 5’6″ & 190 lbs. the medium/large size fit, but I wanted more room to layer clothing for when I’m out in the lake on cold days. So, I settled on the large/X-large size worked for what I needed.
Kayak Life Jackets # 22) Astral Ringo Life Jacket PFD for Whitewater, Sea, Touring Kayaking, and Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Product Summary: The tri-panel front provides conforming, full coverage with a slim fit while the burly materials, quick release harness compatibility and easy access pocket make Ringo an excellent choice for all conditions.
A 5-Star Review: I have had this life vest for about a year, mostly for dinghy trips to shore from our 30’ ocean boat in PWS , AK. Yesterday I was ejected from the boat in the harbor when a big gust of wind tried to push our boat motors first into the dock & we had to gun it to protect the motors from getting smooshed. I flew out before I realized what was happening but the buoyancy of this vest kept me up & out if the water…didn’t even get my hair or shoulders wet! Will definitely buy another when the time comes! I purchased the mens small/md cause I didn’t love the ladies colors. ~135-140 lbs, not busty, love the pocket for taking the radio & bear spray to shore!
Kayak Life Jackets # 23) NAXER Swimming Vests for Adults – Inflatable Kayak Safety Jackets for Kayaking Paddling Snorkeling Boating Canoeing – Packable Lightweight Water Sports Jackets for Men and Women 90-160 lbs

Product Summary: This kayak life jacket is easy to set up and to deflate. Once deflated, it doesn’t take up much space in your case so that you’ll definitely have much more space for other devices or fishing stuff, comparing with that of most other adult life jackets.
A 5-Star Review: Our space is at a premium in our motorhome. We had to get some life vests that would store flat. So we ordered these. We will be using these to kayak. It seems like a great vest for the kayak. I don’t think I would use it for swimming. It stores flat which is what I wanted. there is an inflator valve like a snorkel vest that you can see to blow up the kayak.
A Critical Review: I am 5’8″ and 160 lbs, and this “airline flotation vest” does not fit a woman who wears a 36D bra size! “Skin friendly” material? If crunchy plastic feels nice to you, then ok?
Kayak Life Jackets # 24) XGEAR Adult USCG Life Jacket Water Sports Life Vest

It is made from a durable material that will last for years, and it is designed to provide a comfortable and secure fit. A 5-Star Review: I do like the attached whistle but otherwise nothing special. I bought several and ended up returning this one for an O’Neil one I liked better. Went up a size.
A Critical Review: It is not as represented in the picture it is short rather than long as the picture appears. But it seems like good quality adding the length for all sizes in the purchasing information would help

A 5-Star Review: I like everything about this other than the sheer bulk of the padding. I bought the Wilderness Systems vest in hopes that it would be compatible with my kayak skirt as well. However, the wide padding on the front of the vest makes it challenging to use both at the same time. Good construction and plenty of pockets, sturdy plastic zipper. Love that the colors match my boat and other WS accessories.

See photo. RETURNED.

A 5-Star Review: When I ordered this it did not say what size it was, only what weight it would support. It turns out to be a MED, so I suspect its medium. I could have used one that was longer. But, if I wear it loosely it looks like it will stay out of my way for casting and still be able to keep my head above water should I fall in on that 20 pound monster fish fight ! I’ll give it a go.
Conclusion:
While kayak life jackets are not mandatory in all states, they are always a good idea to have on hand. Wearing a kayak life jacket will help keep you safe in the event of an accident or capsizing. Be sure to choose a life jacket that fits snugly and is comfortable to wear.
