Big and Tall Life Jackets – How to Find the Right Fit

Most people are familiar with life jackets, but not everyone is aware that there are options available for those who are big and tall. Life jackets come in a variety of sizes and styles, so it is important to find one that will fit both your body type and your personal preferences.

There are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a life jacket. First, you need to make sure that the jacket will fit you properly. It should be snug but not too tight, and it should allow you to move freely. Second, you need to consider the type of activity you will be doing while wearing the jacket. If you plan on spending time in the water, then you will need a jacket that is designed for swimming. Finally, you need to think about what kind of climate you will be using the jacket in. If you live in a warm climate, then you will want a light-weight jacket that won’t make you sweat.

Big and tall life jackets are available from many different retailers. You can find them online or in stores that specialize in outdoor gear. When shopping online, be sure to read the sizing information carefully before making your purchase. And if you’re ever unsure about whether or not a particular life jacket will fit, don’t hesitate to ask a sales associate for help.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 1) Body Glove Method USCG Approved Nylon Life Vest

Big and Tall Life Jackets: Body Glove Method USCG Approved Nylon Life Vest by Store Body Glove Store

Product Summary: This pfd is approved by the U.S Coast Guard. The Body Glove Method USCG Approved Nylon Life Vest is a great way to stay safe while enjoying the water. This vest is made with high quality materials and construction, and is approved by the United States Coast Guard. The vest is comfortable to wear and provides ample coverage and protection. The adjustable straps ensure a secure and comfortable fit, and the design allows for full range of motion. The bright colors and reflective strips make this vest highly visible in the water, and the USCG approval ensures that it meets the highest safety standards.

A 5-Star Review: First the good points. The color is better than black as black absorbs the sun and is too hot. Large arm openings for mobility. Very adjustable straps to conform to my fat body shape.lol. Even distribution of buoyancy.. Now that is said I have one major complaint… I was specifically looking for a vest that had a HEAVY DUTY FRONT ZIPPER WITH CLIP STRAPS OVER THE ZIP..😡😡 In the description it stated in 2 different paragraphs in 2 different spots that it had ZIPPER IN FRONT.. This of course was the main reason I selected this vest… I tried to determine in the picture of the product but it was unclear. I was very irate and have a good mind to return it for this reason.. Not that hard to have taken a picture of the Zipper area.. Disappointed. Hate to do it but I saw one at Wally World as I try not to shop there..

A Critical Review: After 1st use we hung it to dry. Apparently none of the internal material is sewn together nor sewn to the shell of the life jacket. The 4layers of foam (or whatever is inside) had folded over on itself. What a bummer to spend time fixing a life jacket instead of playing on the water. Son was super bummed. We’re just past the 30day return window or I’d send it back.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 2) O’Neill Men’s Assault USCG Life Vest

Big and Tall Life Jackets: O'Neill Men's Assault USCG Life Vest by Store O'Neill Wetsuits Store

Product Summary: The O’Neill R&D process provides the best quality, fit and functionality in the industry. Our USCG Life Vests continue to set new standards of excellence in design for all wake and waterski athletes.

A 5-Star Review: This is a great fitting vest especially if you’re on the taller side of things. I measured myself according to the chart and it was spot on. For zippered life vests like this I typically end up 2 sizes larger than my normal shirt size, but alot of that depends on your build. I’m 6’3″ 265. I went with a XXXL and it fits almost perfectly. There’s a little room around my waist but the chest is spot on. With the waist straps tightened its just fine. It feels super-light and flexible compared to others I’ve had. The sides and back are longer and sit right above my waist which I really like.

I have other O’Neill vests for my family that have held up really well. If you’re a big guy and want a vest that’s comfortable to be in all day, than this one is well worth the price.

A Critical Review: I ordered this in a Large size based on the sizing guide which says 39″ to 41″. Well, I have a 40″ chest and typically for any kind of clothing I would choose a Medium, but went with the Large based on the sizing chart. It turns out that even though I have a 40″ chest, I have a 42″ overall waist. Since the vest must accommodate the widest point from shoulders to waist, it didn’t even come close to being able to zip this up. Extremely tight fit. The sizing chart should account for waist size as well as many men have a little extra girth there. The overall quality seems good, but the hassle of having to return it because of a inaccurate/incomplete fit size knocks this down to 3 stars.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 3) NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD)

Big and Tall Life Jackets: NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak Lifejacket (PFD) by Store NRS Store

Product Summary: The NRS Chinook Fishing Kayak PFD is the world’s best-selling lifejacket for kayak anglers offering all of the organization and attachment points needed for your fishing accessories. Not only is it designed to make you more effective on the water, the comfort simply can’t be beat.

A 5-Star Review: I ordered NRS Chinook Fishing PFD (Red, XS/M). I’m 5’5″ and 145 lbs and the size fits me perfectly. I can move my hands forward and backward without any constraints or restrictions. I can turn around my upper body on the sides and didn’t feel any constraints or restrictions as well. I think I should be able to row and fish without any problems.

I also tested the safety it will provide me just in case I fall over from the kayak into the water. I did my testing in a swimming pool. I did the test from three possible positions from which I could fall from the kayak and into the water i.e., sitting, kneeling and standing positions. The possible falls that I did were: 1) falling on my side; 2) falling backward with back of the head into the water; and 3) falling forward face down into the water.

1) falling on my side – after the fall on the water and not moving, my upper body slowly turned upside with my face facing the sky. This will allow me to be able to regain consciousness and breath if it so happens I fall on side and losing consciousness.
2) falling backward with back of the head into the water – after the fall, my body assumed a straight position. My lower body, from the waist down to my feet started to float upward and my body assumed a semi-supine position and my face facing the sky. This will allow me to be able to regain consciousness and breath if it so happens I fall on side and losing consciousness.
3) falling forward face down into the water – after the fall, my body assumed a straight position. My lower body, from the waist down to my feet started to float upward and my body assumed an upside-down position with my face facing and into the water. If I fell down into this position and lost my consciousness, there’s a probably that I might drown since my face is in the water. My body turned downside-up i.e., my face is facing the sky, only if I raise my head up. When I raised my head, my upper body turned to the side and up facing the sky allowing me to breath. Hopefully something can be done better in the PFD in case somebody fall face down into the water and lost consciousness.

Overall, the PFD did its job ( as long as you don’t lose consciousness during the fall 🙂 )

A Critical Review: Love the NRS brand and their Chinook PFD specifically. When trying to replace my current L/XL I decided to purchase another L/XL. Who knew they changed their chest dimensions at some point and now the L/XL is too large. Went from 38”-46” to 42”-52”. Nowhere in the product description was there a size chart, so I had no reason to suspect this. Returned.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 4) STEARNS Nylon Youth Vest

Big and Tall Life Jackets: STEARNS Nylon Youth Vest by Brand: STEARNS

Product Summary: The STEARNS Nylon Youth Vest is a great life jacket for kids. It’s made with durable nylon and has a comfortable fit. The life jacket is USCG-approved and has a bright orange color for high visibility. It also has a convenient zippered closure.

A 5-Star Review: Great for my boys for paddle boarding! Love the man-down loop on the back to pull them up when they jump off the board.

A Critical Review: Title

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 5) Zeraty Adult Swim Jacket for Fishing Sailing Surfing Boating Kayaking for Water Sports

Big and Tall Life Jackets: Zeraty Adult Swim Jacket for Fishing Sailing Surfing Boating Kayaking for Water Sports by Store Zeraty Store

Product Summary: The Zeraty Adult Swim Jacket is a top-of-the-line choice for anyone looking for a versatile and durable swim jacket for fishing, sailing, surfing, or kayaking. It is made of a lightweight, breathable, and waterproof material that will keep you comfortable in any conditions. The jacket also features a hood, multiple pockets, and reflective strips for safety.

A 5-Star Review: Exactly the same product as sold in big box stores but at 1/2 their price

A Critical Review: Received the vests today and was a bit surprised about the quality. We initially purchased the red and decided to exchange it for the orange to match our bags. The red was very good quality and all looks in order. These have spots and random “dirt or stains” on them. The fabric was also a bit shabby compared to the red. Some stitches are way off line. We don’t want to return them just yet since we needed them for an upcoming kayak trip. This definitely is a quality control issue. We hope they hold up for a day trip or they’re going back to seller.
UPDATE: Fabric started to rip away from stitch after single use. See photo. RETURNED.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 6) Stearns Comfort Series Collared Angler Vest

Big and Tall Life Jackets: Stearns Comfort Series Collared Angler Vest by Brand: STEARNS

Product Summary: A convenient, breathable design will have you wanting to wear your life jacket on the boat when it’s a Stearns Comfort Series Collared Angler Vest. Forget the balancing act of getting over to the other side of the boat for a new rig—keep your favorite tackle in two large zippered front pockets that pull double duty as handwarmers on brisk days. Of course, the most noticeable difference is the mesh fabric on the shoulder panels that allow for added ventilation on breezy days and the flexible neoprene collar that prevents chafing. The US Coast Guard-approved design is constructed of PVC/PE flotation foam surrounded by a durable 200D nylon oxford shell with a zippered front and two adjustable 1-in. (2.54-cm) webbed straps.

A 5-Star Review: I like it – it’s a back up fishing PFD for my backup kayak. I am not keeping a full set up in 2 locations…so I needed another PFD.

It’s OK – it’s big, but it cinches down easy (52″ chest, 38″ waist) and I like the subdued coloring. I had hopes of being able to use the pockets more…but they are TINY and VERY NARROW at the top. I could put a few things on a string and drop them into the pocket…pull them up by the string… but that’s about it. (Flashlight, whistle, drying cork for flies, etc…)

It’s OK and I’m not gonna return it – I like Stearns as my primary PFD is a strap Stearns model about 15 years old and works wonderfully. Can’t find that one anymore and this is close. I’ll wear a fishing vest over it to give me more pocket access in cooler weather and figure something else out in warmer weather. It’s a PFD first and foremost…and I want to wear one all the time when I’m on the water.

A Critical Review: I think it’s great life jacket however the quality control isn’t the best. During my first wear I noticed my pocket had a hole in it where my emergency whistle could fall out of.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 7) Stohlquist Fisherman Adult Men’s Life Jacket – Excellent Cockpit Management, Dual Front-Mounted Pockets for Equipment – High Back Ultimate Comfort for Kayak Seating

Big and Tall Life Jackets: Stohlquist Fisherman Adult Men's Life Jacket - Excellent Cockpit Management, Dual Front-Mounted Pockets for Equipment - High Back Ultimate Comfort for Kayak Seating by Store Stohlquist Waterware Store

Product Summary: The Fisherman has dual front-mounted tool pockets with protective EVA stiffened outer shells to protect pocket contents, and fold down workstations.

A 5-Star Review: Fits great very comfortable to wear all day fishing in a kayak. Nice accessories pockets for fishing tools ⚒️ and clip for knife attachment.

A Critical Review: It’s a great fishing kayak vest for a male 😀 but it doesn’t fit the female anatomy on top.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 8) ONYX General Purpose Boating Life Jacket, Adult Oversize Size (40″-60″), Blue

Big and Tall Life Jackets: ONYX General Purpose Boating Life Jacket, Adult Oversize Size (40

The Adult Universal vest fits chest sizes of 30″ – 52″, and over 90 lbs and Oversize vest fits chest sizes of 40″ – 60″, and over 90 lbs.

A 5-Star Review: Over sized life preserver came as described….worth the money

A Critical Review: Quality is reasonable for this life vest. I got one for me and one for my wife. I got the XXL and she got the regular adult size. The sizes are WAY TOO SMALL. The big size (actually labeled L/3XL, seriously? How can something be both “L” and “3XL”?) “fit” me with about a 10″ gap in the front. Basically, they took the size that an average adult male would wear and added an extra foot of nylon tape for the big guys. I am 6’2″ and weigh about 315lbs. All of my shirts are 2XL, but I wear them snug, and could probably buy 3XL. The smaller adult size fit my wife, kinda. It was mostly closed in the front with only a few inch gap. The one that was meant for me fit her comfortably. She is 5’10” and wears a size12, so she’s definitely smaller than an average sized man. These aren’t terrible if you’re looking to spend to have a legally compliant life vest in your boat, but if you have any interest in actually wearing them while doing anything active, definitely look else ware. And if you do buy these, definitely size up.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 9) Kent ONYX Adult Universal Type 2 USCG Approved Life Jacket , Universal (Adults 90+ lbs, 30″-52″ chest)

A 5-Star Review: Nice!!!

A Critical Review: A basic life perserver. Easy to wear, but not very comfortable. Of course I don’t think you would expect much more from this. If you need extra life perserver to be legal, this is the way to go.

A 5-Star Review: My daughter is 8 y/o and 50 lb she is a skinny little thing. It fit ok. But it did it’s job!

A Critical Review: I have a 50 pound daughter, life jacket holds 50 to 80 pounds, when i took the jacket off i noticed it was really heavy. Had a bunch of water in it. So much that i couldn’t treasure it indoors until it completely drained. Was about 10 pounds with the water in it.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 12) O’Neill Infant Superlite USCG Life Vest

Big and Tall Life Jackets: O'Neill Infant Superlite USCG Life Vest by Store O'Neill Wetsuits Store

Product Summary: The O’Neill Infant Superlite USCG Life Vest is a great choice for your little one. The Superlite life vest also features a leg strap to help keep it in place and two adjustable straps for a snug, secure fit.

A 5-Star Review: I give five stars for comfort because it fit my daughter the way it was supposed to, however I think she’d give it a 1 because she didn’t like wearing it at all. (That does have anything to do with the product though.) It’s SO cute and due to how tiny she is I will be able to get two years of use out of it.

A Critical Review: This was too big and bulky for my 16 lb 6 oz 4 month old grandson.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 13) NRS Chinook OS Fishing Lifejacket (PFD)

Big and Tall Life Jackets: NRS Chinook OS Fishing Lifejacket (PFD) by Brand: NRS

Product Summary: The NRS Chinook OS Fishing Lifejacket (PFD) has the fit and design inspired by their most popular life jacket with added features for open-water safety and convenience. It offers all of the organization and attachment points needed for your fishing accessories. The comfort simply can’t be beat.

A 5-Star Review: This PFD was supper comfortable. It did not ride up and at times I didn’t even feel like I had anything on. I love all the pockets. So far it hasn’t gotten stained which is what I was worried about considering the bright color.

A Critical Review: Overall, very good PFD for kayak fishing. Comfortable, ez to adjust. Quality could be better as in workmanship, stitching etc. For example, one shoulder strap is sewn off kilter from the other. when both shoulder straps adjusted the same, one is positioned higher than the other. Doesn’t affect performance, just the crooked look gets noticed.

BIG CON: neither of the smaller front pockets will hold & zip close with IPhone-12 Pro Max, especially with a protective case on the phone. The phone will barely fit in the larger left pocket, but then this takes away from that pocket’s internal strap holders for lip balm, other small essentials to have in that pocket when fishing. Nor will those 2 right front pockets contain a 5w size VHF portable radio either. Also, no D-rings to attach gear leash retainers, instead fabric tabs with 2 holes. Not sure if these fabric tabs/holes will be good in the long run. Wish mfg added the D-Rings like their C-Vest Kayak PFD has.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 14) O’Brien Men’s Flex V-Back Life Jacket

The O’Brien flex V-back is made with biotite construction to minimize weight and enhance breathability. This life jacket is perfect for watersports enthusiasts who want a life jacket that moves with their body and provides the safety they need.

A 5-Star Review: So this vest is pretty snug but fits my body type perfectly. I’m 6’1″ and weigh 193 lbs with an athletic and toned build but also a small belly. The belly is where this vest is tight so if you have any kind of belly past mine you might want to consider that.

I really like how mobile this vest is for the upper body. It will be excellent for boating and lake activities.

A Critical Review: Product looks like a good quality vest for the price. However, I don’t understand why company’s go thru the work of providing a sizing chart before purchase if their own information in conjunction with the product is incorrect. I ordered a 2XL which according to their chart would fit based on chest and waist measurements. They are definitely off by at least one size and maybe closer to two sizes. Get your sizing right otherwise we are just wasting one another’s time.

A 5-Star Review: I came here looking for a life jacket that would fit me as a plus size female. I came across this one but the reviews were for small children/ toddlers. Today 6/21/2021 I received my life jacket and it fits great. I am 5’5 290lbs. Jean size 20-22 top 3x and it fit perfect I could have gone down a size but I wanted to be sure that it would fit. Hope this helps.

A Critical Review: Way too small

Big and Tall Life Jackets: O'Neill Men's Slasher Comp Life Vest by Store O'Neill Wetsuits Store

Product Summary: The O’Neill Competition Vest lineup defies convention and sets a new industry standard for performance driven technology. The lightest vests in the water just got lighter, stronger and dry faster than ever.

A 5-Star Review: I’m 225 pounds little bit of a fat boy I am. I love sugar and have a sugar belly. Well that sugar belly doesn’t fit into this ski vest. But it was a very nice vest it felt great except my belly would not fit in there. I would love to wear a soft vest like this if I can get my little belly in there.

A Critical Review: Men’s L doesn’t fit a 5’8″ athletic female in a wetsuit.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 18) Yukon Sport Paddle Life Vest | Multiple Colors Available

Big and Tall Life Jackets: Yukon Sport Paddle Life Vest | Multiple Colors Available by Store Yukon Charlie's Store

Product Summary: Our Top Pick: The Paddle Vest from Amazon is our top pick for the best lightweight performance paddle vest. It features a segmented, hinged body with a chest shelf to accommodate any user. The reflective stripes on the front ensure you are seen while paddling at dusk. The drain vents allow this PFD to ventilate and shed water if and when you flip and roll.

A 5-Star Review: This life jacket is awesome for kayaking. I don’t feel super stuffed into it and it isn’t abrasive on the arms during paddling!! Would definitely recommend for kayaking!! Also us a very good kayak for larger chested women!!!

A Critical Review: I purchased this life vest for paddle boarding. I’m a strong swimmer, but felt better with having a vest if I was boarding by myself. I fell off my board with the vest on and the vest almost slipped off the too of me. I have the vest snug around me, so was surprised that I almost lost it in the water. The other surprise I got was the zipper didn’t stay up when I fell in and came 1/2 unzipped. If I need to vest to truly help me stay afloat I would have been in big trouble. I don’t if the issues is my body type, I am tall and busy, but I would have expected the vest to stayed with my body better.

The vest float very well, it just didn’t want to stay on my body.

I can’t return b/c I used it, but if I could I would.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 19) Full Throttle Traditional Ski CGA Life Jacket Jacket

Product Summary: The Full Throttle Traditional Ski CGA Life Jacket is a great choice for anyone looking for a high-quality, reliable life jacket. This jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved and features a durable nylon shell and a comfortable polyester lining. The jacket also has a adjustable waist and a convenient front zip closure.

A 5-Star Review: I was both dubious and desperate when I ordered this vest. I needed one for a water park that requires one but their one size fits all offerings I knew would be too small. I am a 6x or 7x shirt and this fits !!! Comfortable and light weight it’s perfect!

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 20) Stohlquist Escape Youth Lifejacket-Lime-Youth

Product Summary: The escape Youth PFD combines the essentials of comfort and safety. The escape has 8 points of adjustability ensuring an excellent fit. The buckle around the waist is protected by a nylon inner flap so as to not rub uncomfortably against the stomach. The escape Youth PFD includes a zippered and pleated chest pocket where your child can keep small treasures, Sunscreen, glasses or treats.

A 5-Star Review: Love the ease of a zipper, and has higher floatation than most to keep our kids safe. Highly recommended! 👍🏼👍🏼

A Critical Review: I’m really sorry to give this jacket two stars, but it should probably get one star. I’ve recommended the infant and smaller youth Stohlquist life jackets to many individuals – they are wonderful! This one, however, does not compare. It came unzipped while my son was wearing it and kayaking around the lake, it also came unzipped while he was swimming and jumping in the water. Luckily, my sever-year-old is a strong swimmer and he was never in danger. Additionally, maybe my child is just bad at using zippers, but he also has trouble zipping it up on his own. I don’t feel comfortable having my son use this as an actual life-saving device and I don’t want to let other children use it when they are on our boat. I hope I can have this jacket returned and refunded even though it has been used several times.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 21) Jet Pilot Fleet Neoprene CGA Vest

Product Summary: The Fleet is a great option for those looking for comfort and style at a great price point. With a variety of watersports activities available, the Fleet is perfect for anyone looking to have a fun and relaxing day out.

A 5-Star Review: Looks great and fits well. Would recommend

A Critical Review: We loved these when we got them!!! They are super soft and comfortable. Unfortunately, after a few uses the insides on the back panel bunched up and looks really bad :/

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 22) Stohlquist Women’s Misty Lifejacket (PFD)

Product Summary: The misty Women’s PFD features a thin back design offering more coverage and ensuring compatibility with any seat back style. The misty is great for use with boats that feature a higher seat back, but are right at home in a touring boat with sprayskirt. A thinner profile provides more mobility and comfort, while reducing interference with today’s taller seat backs. Along with providing a great fit, the misty also features multiple pockets that will hold a beverage, your sunglasses, and other small items. Sizing: (bust) sm: 28-34 in. Md: 34-40 in. Lg: 40-46 in. Adjustable shoulders, and dual forward pulls for a custom fit. Zippered front pockets offer organization. Built-in beverage holder and neoprene sunglasses sleeve. Entry grip tab at zipper base.#10 YKK zipper with non-corroding slider. For sit-on-tops, the vest can be worn lower on the Torso for maximum back coverage against tall seats. For touring boats, simply adjust the shoulder straps so that the vest rides higher on your Torso, and eliminates interference with your spray skirt.

A 5-Star Review: This life jacket is form fit for a female figure and fits perfectly. It’s designed for paddling does not bind in front or under the arms. My only complaint is that the front pockets snap rather than zip, possibly allowing small items to escape n the case of n overboard spill.

A Critical Review: Too bulky.

A 5-Star Review: My teenage daughter really wanted a neoprene life vest for water skiing and tubing. Since we had a limited budget I went with this one. I’m very glad I did. It has a nice slim and does not rise up to my daughter’s ears when she’s in the water. The 3rd buckle is a nice feature. Also, my daughter was very happy that it is black and turquoise and not a super bright neon color like many others.

A Critical Review: I’m 5’3”, 112lbs, and have a 32” chest and a small has about a 3” gap from the sides being able to touch, which makes me feel silly. It’s also super thick and bulky, not as described. It’s pretty short too, which a lot of short women prefer, but somehow it makes me feel like I’m trying to wear my 5 year old granddaughter’s life vest 😂

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 31) Astral Ringo Life Jacket PFD for Whitewater, Sea, Touring Kayaking, and Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Product Summary: The tri-panel front provides conforming, full coverage with a slim fit while the burly materials, quick release harness compatibility and easy access pocket make Ringo an excellent choice for all conditions.

A 5-Star Review: I started kayaking recently and needed a quality PFD. Knowing nothing about PFDs and what brands are good for kayaking, I started researching and reading a billion reviews on various paddling sites, etc. Astral, of course, was frequently mentioned as a top contender. I eventually settled on the Ringo and I have not been disappointed.

Sizing was a bit of a guessing game because that is not anywhere nearly as simple as sizing guides on PDFs would have you believe. But I guessed pretty well on the first try.

I’m 5′ 6″ tall. Wear a mens large shirt, as a rule. Chest is 41″. My waist (not pant size) is about 40″. Pant size is a 38. I weigh 160 lbs. NOT an athletic build, unless couch surfing is a sport. I bought the medium/large.

At first I thought it was too small and almost returned it, but I felt like the next size up was going to be huge. I don’t tend to buy things with the idea that I will lose weight and get into them, but I am going in the shrinking direction, so I decided to keep it, not really knowing how tight PFDs are supposed to be.

Well, turns out that cinching them down on yourself, just short of squeezing yourself in half, is about right. Shouldn’t be too tight and restrict breathing, hurt you, or cut off circulation. But it has to be tight enough not to pop off over your head or into your face when you hit the water.

I do find that this tends to ride up a little when paddling, partly because my seat back pushes it up. It does not have back panel that is cut away or thin for kayak seats. (Some do.) So it is bulky in the back. That said, it is definitely not too big, and if I get it cinched down well on the sides, it pretty much stays put.

The quality is great. I have zero complaints. It’s totally worth the price tag.

My one real piece of advice to people not well-versed in PFDs, in hindsight, is to go into a store and get some professional advice about fit. Try some on. Get some feedback. Think about what you want to wear the PFD over. I’m not sure this one is going to go over a wetsuit or a dry suit, for example. Summer time, it’s great.

But I really like Astral products so far. I bought two of their dog floatation vests and they are AWESOME. My dogs bob like corks in them, so if they go over the side of the kayak, they are well supported and the great buoyancy helps get them back into the kayak. Highly recommend their dog life jackets.

If I need other PFDs for various conditions, my first stop will be Astral again.

A 5-Star Review: I wanted a bright orange color PFD for use in my fishing boat. I have another style PFD made by this company that I wear when I’m in my kayak, so I was confident in the quality and fit of this brand. A little pricey, but should perform well. I’m 5’6″ & 190 lbs. the medium/large size fit, but I wanted more room to layer clothing for when I’m out in the lake on cold days. So, I settled on the large/X-large size worked for what I needed.

Big and Tall Life Jackets # 34) ONYX Adult General Purpose Life Jacket, MOE Marlin, Universal

Product Summary: The Onyx general purpose vest features classic open sided styling. Quick release buckles and 1″ Belts provide a secure fit. These vests are U. S. Coast Guard approved. The Adult Universal Vest fits chest sizes of 30″ – 52″, and over 90 lbs.

A 5-Star Review: This will fit a variety of sizes of adults. Not for extremely heavy people though.

A Critical Review: It fits as far as being universal and working for a general life jacket but it drives me crazy when kayaking. When I’m sitting in the kayak it digs into my neck the entire time which makes it very uncomfortable. I can’t get it to stay down and out of the way. I would definitely choose a different life jacket in the future.
