A 5-Star Review: Doesn’t disappoint. It’s extremely comfortable, has tremendous grip, and the wide natural feel is amazing. This was my first 0mm wide toebox shoe and it will be my go to. Putting on other shoes feels weird now that my feet are used to have all this room.
A Critical Review: After watched a youtube about fixing bunions, I ordered this shoes as it is recommended. I compared it to my New Balance shoes and here is what I found:
1. The Altra shoes is fairly narrow. The Altra I bought is a US size 10 for men. Its does have a relatively wide toe box, if you compare it to Nike. However, this toe box is exactly the same width as my NBs which are only of US size 9.5 extra wide.
2. The rest of shoes body in the Altra is actually slightly narrow than NB size 9.5 extra wide.
3. Also all my NB seem better made.
So I’d recommend the Altra shoes if all you want is a big toe box. I would not wear the Altra if I have a wide feet.

I thought they fit great in the beginning but I wore them two more times and I found that my big toe was hitting the front of the shoe, I wish I would have ordered a half size bigger but I am now outside of the return window and these shoes are just sitting in my house. make sure to buy a half size bigger!

A 5-Star Review: Loved that there was no break in time on these. Also love that they wear like a sneaker but offer more ankle support. Not heavy and bulky like most hiking boots. I just wish they fit me better 😫 I am a size 5.5 in all shoes and I am swimming in these. I’m sure the wider toe box adds to that, but they are just too big and now I have worn them so I can’t return them or exchange for a smaller size (PLEASE make size 5!!) Bummer. I would love to be able to wear them hiking/backpacking.
A Critical Review: The product arrived on time. I was shocked at how lite the shoe was it almost felt cheap!! I tried it on and it did feel amazing except I have thin feet so this shoe was way too big for me!!! Also the top of the toe material came dented in it almost felt like the material was so thin that anything would dent it!!! It made me think how could that hold up on rocks when the box dented them!!?? Anyways I sent them back! I didn’t feel it was worth to keep!

A 5-Star Review: I did the TMB ( Tour du Mont Blanc) in it in July/August. These were brand new. I always trust Altra shoes even if they’re brand new. 105 miles with 34680 elevation gain and loss in 9 days. I had no blisters or any discomfort. Highly recommend these shoes for hiking!

A 5-Star Review: For the flat footed, this shoe is awesome! I’ve been wearing low and zero drop shoes for a wile now, I’ve tried about 6 different brands already, and have to say these are my favorite shoe. (Excluding boots). Plenty of support even tho it doesn’t have a heel counter, lots of space for toe splay and plenty of grip for trails and a little much for in town walking but still comfortable.
Not sure about the heel rubbing blisters yet, walked around in these for a few hours with no hot spots or pinching at all. Very breathable with a thin but still padded tongue. As far a cushion goes it’s very supple without being overly spongy with plenty of support. (I’m 5’10 235 size 12.5 shoe).
If your looking for a trail/hiking shoe that is light weight and grippy give these a try!
A Critical Review: I’ve previously owned Lone Peak 4, Timp 1.5, and Superior 4. All of these shoes were great fitting with the wide toe box. I have a wide toe box and high instep but a narrow heel so finding shoes that aren’t too tight or sloppy fitting is hard. The best shoe I ever owned was the Timp 1.5. For some reason Altra has moved away from the generous toe box and has gone back to making shoes like everybody else. I’ve tried the Lone Peak 4.5, Timp 2.0, and Olympus 4.0 hoping to find that same fit to no avail. These shoes all have a narrower toe box that pinch my toes. I took a measuring tape to compare my Timp 1.5 to these Lone Peak 5.0 and there is fully 1/4 inch difference in width! I contacted Altra support and they promised the Lone Peak 5.0 would be going back to the original wide toe box fit. What a let down when I received my beautiful red Lone Peak 5.0s. Not only was the toe box too cramped but the lace up portion down by my toes now pinches too. They make a Wide version now that may remedy the problem but they only make it in the nasty looking Blue/Lime. Really Altra, is this the best you can do? So very disappointed I have to look elsewhere.

I wear size 12 in Altra Torin Plush 4.5, Escilante and Lone Peak 5, 12.5 in Altra Solstice XT. Haven’t wore my Olympus 5 outdoors yet. Will update this review once I break them down

A Critical Review: I wanted to like this shoe. It is waterproof, and lighter than the LonePeak 4 RSM. However, it doesn’t have the additional eyelet at the top, and when laced-up, is not very snug. Additionally, that little bit of looseness at the top makes it easier for mud and debris to fall into the shoe, and this model of the LonePeak also isn’t compatible with Altra’s gaiters, which compounds the issue.

A Critical Review: I have had these shoes for almost a year and a half. So I guess the results aren’t as bad as I thought them to be. I walk easy to moderate trails with hills and uneven ground, 3 miles or less, 2 to 4 times a week. They still have half of the tread but the footbox separated from the base at the front outside on both shoes. I glued them back together and the first walk the held up. Throughout there has not been enough lateral support for these shoes to walk sloped or uneven ground. I really wish there was some way to add a rigid support for the ankle/arch area to the heal. I love the ventilation and the toe box is the reason I keep coming back. The shoe separation and lack of support brought it to a three star.

The gaiter hook and rear hook and loop attachments are a must to keep stuff out. My only complaint is the traction on wet granite is horrible!

A 5-Star Review: How can I give these shoes 10 stars here? They deserve every single one. Never in my life have I found such a comfortable, yet high performance shoe. I’m thinking the entire shoe industry ignores the FACT that not all women have slender, tiny feminine feet with no genetically wide feet, bunions or other feet issues, and only stick to their stereo types of decades past. That given a choice we’d take a pair of wide over M any day. FINALLY a shoe brand that GET IT. Sorry if I am shouting but I am truly, truly in love with these shoes after decades of pain and the so called “breaking in” period that NEVER has to happen if you just get into a pair of these Altra shoes.
I am 57 years old and run 40 minutes every other day on gravel and dirt roads in the country and fast walk 20 so an hour a day. I am not in the city on a paved path kind of woman, I am hard on my shoes. I also trail run and hike when time is available to get away.
I was worried about these having shoe laces since my last two pairs of shoes, which were Solomons, had cords, but I just double knot and have had no issues yet with these laces coming unraveled.
I’ve tried other highly recommended shoe brands in the past and they just don’t measure up. I don’t feel the ground coming up through the sole in these if you know what I mean. I also don’t feel like I’m running on a hard plastic, resisting the terrain. You’ve got to try these shoes!!
A Critical Review: It is with great consternation that I will give these shoes two stars. They retain one of the two simply for legacy of quality of workmanship and durability. I recently have bought two other pair, both 3.0 Lone Peak High Tops, that I returned. I returned these 3.5 Lone Peaks, too! I have no idea what has happened, but nothing has fit like the 3.0 Lone Peaks I bought 2 years ago.
I am still wearing the 7.5 for work in the hospital. (I donated the 8’s because I kept juuuust catching the toes every so often.) The width in the arch, forefoot, and toe box is absolutely PERFECT for the walking I do. (Trail Running, I would want a fraction more snugness in the length just so I don’t snag a toe, but since U.S. won’t make a 1/3 size…Oh, well!)
The three pair I have bought and returned in the last six weeks or so, sizes 7, 7.5 and 8, have all been fit nearly the same: Short and narrow!!! The 7, I was only mildly surprised by; I hadn’t expected them to be quite as small as they were seeing as how my 7.5s are a smidge roomy. What I was absolutely baffled by was the continued circulation-offending snugness over the arch regardless of the size of the shoe!!! I was seeing reviews about sizing up a half or even whole size, but in Altras?! This should NOT be a consideration! I don’t know if there are a load of knock-offs out there or if Altra has started developing so many models that they have lost sight of what made them really unique.
An aside is the condition of the boxes these shoes are coming in. Perhaps if the shoeboxes weren’t placed in plastic shipping bags?

A 5-Star Review: I ordered these in size 9.0. I’m usually between 8.5-9.0 in running shoes and these were no exception. These fit EXACTLY like the Escalante 1.5s – but the similarities don’t stop there! These respond like the Escalante 1.5s – they’re light, flexible and have just the right amount of cushion, without being heavy and overbearing. I purchased these in the plum color – which is versatile. It’s adds some color to my usually black workout wardrobe but isn’t so colorful that they’re distracting. These are my travel sneaks. I’m on the road quite a bit for work and these transition well from airport, to hotel treadmill, to light trail running. I do recommend using the rock plates that come with these if you’re planning on doing anything rocky. They’re a great option to have – they add the needed protection without the weight and clunky-ness of an overwhelming sole. The gaiter trap on the back of the shoe is a nice touch as well. There’s also a feature on these that I’ve never experienced before – the tongue is actually attached to the shoe at the inside – so it doesn’t slip mid-run! The laces are long – if that bothers you – I usually just tuck them in and it’s not a problem. There’s also a nice reflective detail on the inside lace loops/holders. I’m buying more of these before the next version comes out!
A Critical Review: Disappointed. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Altras and was stoked to own a pair. The toe box and grip were great, but I couldn’t get over how squishy, and unstable the shoes felt. There seemed to be an overall lack of arch support, my feet were turning inward when running with them, which naturally made the rest of my feet compensate leaving me with aches I shouldn’t have had. I also had a problem with my socks slipping while in the shoes. All in all, these shoes did not leave me confident in my runs. I was having to compensate the whole way. I did return them, and only received a partial refund, which I thought was crappy given the 30 day return policy. Couldn’t recommend these.

A 5-Star Review: I note that the shoe runs a little small because I’m a size 6, I usually go up a half-size for athletic shoes, and in this shoe I wear a 7 which fits great. I like these a lot; I needed a shoe for walking/hiking in colder / wet weather. These keep out the wind AND you can walk through puddles or slush and your feet stay dry. I find these very comfortable; love the roomy toe box. I will note that I have a high arch (not pathologically so, meaning I do not have any foot or gait problems, but high enough that a physical therapist exclaimed over it) and this zero drop shoe is just fine for me. The right level of support. I do like a shoe where I can feel the ground.
Anyway the one complaint that I’ve seen in some other reviews and I have to agree with is that the shoe doesn’t seem to stand up very well to normal wear. I’ve already got a bit of a tear or crack in the material where it naturally has to bend (top of shoe, like around the base of the big toe) and it’s only been a few months of use, probably 10 miles per week. It’s like the material, to be waterproof, just doesn’t flex well and cracks at these points of strain? It’s fine, it’s not like rain is getting in or wind or anything. But it’s something I noticed; just seems really fast for that kind of wear & tear to show up.
That said! I do not regret my purchase! It’s great to find a shoe that is this comfortable and functional online, without having tried it on first!
A Critical Review: Shoes are waterproof and comfortable to hike in. The material on the outside of the shoe is breaking down. While I like the functionality of the shoe, I believe it’s overpriced for the quality.

If you put this tread on the superiors that would be the perfect shoe for me. 5 star shoe for hiking and I am talking about extreme hiking on wet, rocky, sandy, muddy terrain. If you want the best hiking shoe for long extreme hikes, I don’t think you will find better

A 5-Star Review: I have done lot of trail running in the last 15 years. I will usually try a new brand of running shoes after every intense training/race. So I’ve gone through about every company available. But these are the best shoes I’ve ever owned! By far. I have tried Altras before and was not impressed. I got holes in the toes after some longer hikes and I thought they ran small. I wasn’t going to purchase this brand again, but after some research on wide feet, I went for it and purchased these. They are designed perfectly for my foot shape. Couldn’t be happier. These may just be the ones that stick from year to year. Even better than my Brooks Adrenaline that are usually my go-to when I’ve bought new ones that hurt my feet. 100% Recommend.
A Critical Review: These may work for some people, but they did NOT work for me. I wore them walking around my neighborhood (about 40 miles of walks) to break them in, and on a few flat trail walks, and they were fine. The traction is good and I like the wide toe box (thus the second star). After testing them out in those environments I took them on a 3-day back country backpacking trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park and they were a nightmare. I don’t know if it was the design of the lacing or the lack of arch support, but my ankles kept collapsing in towards one another (which NEVER happens to me). After a long weekend of about 30 miles of rough hiking with elevation and some volcanic gravel type terrain I ended the trip in severe pain. Both of my feet are messed up, my ankles and hips are sore, and my right knee is swollen to the size of a cantaloupe & I can’t bend or straighten it all the way (no specific injury event happened, it’s just from using these shoes). I will go back to my Hokas and Danners. For reference, I have high arches and rigid feet. My feet are also on the wide side which is why I was attracted to the wide toe box of these shoes – and I do like that feature. My husband has narrow feet with average arches, and he wore a pair of Altra Lone Peaks and loved them.
Conclusion:
After testing out a pair of Altra shoes on a recent hike, I can say with certainty that they are some of the best hiking shoes on the market.
