Rumtek Monastery at Gangtok

Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek Monastery, also called the Dharmachakra Centre. The monastery is currently the largest in Sikkim. It is home to the community of monks and where they perform the rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage. A golden stupa contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa. Opposite that building is a college, Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. The Rumtek Monastery features in the 2014 Indian mystery thriller novel The emperor's riddles by Satyarth Nayak.

This is zoo is quite unique and the first of its kind in India where animals are kept in natural habitats (well I should say semi natural habitats). it's a wonderful parkland that spans across a vast 230 hectares forested land with elevations ranging from 6,500 t0 8,000 feet. The entrance to the Zoo is located at the end of a short pathway opposite to Ganesh Tok. It's about 6kms from Gangtok town.

Ban Jhakri Waterfall at Gangtok

Ban Jhakri Waterfall

This 100-foot waterfall is located in a landscaped park with forested area at about 7kms from Gangtok town and close to Ranka Monastery. There are paved pathways and footbridge around the park which spreads across some 2-acres of land area with many trees and flowering plants in it. It's a popular picnic spot. There is also a manmade lake here with a dragon at the center. The entire park is themed on Shaman culture and you can see Sikkimese architecture visible all across the park. There are gazebos at several points where you can relax while soaking in the view of the flowing stream that forms at the bottom of the waterfall and the greenery all around.

Tsongmo Lake at Gangtok

It is also called as Changu Lake and is crossed by the Nathu la Pass on the north. The Chinese border is pretty close to this lake with a small distance of only 5 kilometers, but is however 18 kilometers by road

The mighty mountain pass of Nathu La is located at an astonishing height of approximately 4,310 meters above sea level and is considered to be one of the highest motor able mountain passes in the world. The pass is open to the citizens of India and a special permit is needed for the foreign tourists.

Ropeway at Gangtok


This is one of the greatest attractions in Gangtok and should not be missed. It's a double-cable zig back ropeway, it takes you to the highest point of the city by covering the distance of around 1 km. Deorali Market (the Lower Terminal Station), Nam Nang (The intermediate terminal) and Secretariat (Tashiling) are different stations of this ropeway.
