A 5-Star Review: My five year old son is very sensitive about what shoes he will wear, most of the time he’d be barefoot if he could or wears crocs. However, we needed something more rugged for a month long, cross country camping trip. We have used this brands sneakers before for our outdoor adventures and they did great keeping his feet dry in rain and held up to his super rough play. So we went for these boots for our bigger adventure. He actually loved them and asked to wear them even on parts of the trip he didn’t need to. We hiked some moderate trials with lots of incline and rocks and boulders and he was so excited about the grip. He was climbing and really pushing the boots to their limit walking up steep rocks with ease. He also wore them every day for a week when we were in a dry, dusty environment to keep his feet from getting dirty and dry. No complaints and were only a little sweaty with running and play.
A Critical Review: My boys found these to be very comfortable right off the bat and took them on long hikes and mountain biking in CO. They did not need any “breaking in”. Unfortunately both pairs had the same problem, the metal pieces the straps feed through are not strong enough. They were constantly pulling apart and coming out of the boots. Luckily I was carrying needle-nose players to keep putting them back together. Ultimately we lost 1 on a hike and 3 others required many repairs. If this issue was fixed, these would be the best. The boys were very sure-footed thanks to the grip of the sole and overall flexibility.

He’ll get a new pair every year because both pairs had outlasted such abuse!

A 5-Star Review: We “unlaced” the shoes as far as we could and with great difficulty finally got it on my daughters foot. Once it was on, the top of the shoe was digging into the top of her foot. I don’t believe it’s a size issue because she wears other shoes in a smaller size and they fit just fine. We got them a little bigger so she could wear hiking socks but she tried them on with thin socks so thicker socks would have felt even worse. I gave them 2 stars because they are great looking and I trust Keen quality.

My daughter got these for a fall Girl Scout camp a year ago. She wore them for that, through all the Midwest rain & snow let winter, on the many rainy days in the spring, and to many weeks of nature camp over the summer.
To summarize, I bought these a year ago. They were worn immediately and frequently outdoors by a 10-year-old who is active and very hard on her shoes. They’re still in such great shape that she could still wear them until she outgrows them. I wish I could afford the adult version for her now.

A 5-Star Review: I got a pair of these (size 11) last year for my 3-year-old. She was a size 10 at the time and I expected these to be a bit roomy, but I have to say a downside to these is they’re really hard to get on due to the elastic laces and the high top. Even a year later, she still needs help putting them on. So I find that frustrating. The stiff material makes it impossible to feel their toes through it, so it’s just hard overall to tell how they fit. That aside, they’ve held up great and really are waterproof. So I got this pair for my 2-year-old. She just moved to a size 7, but based on the experience I had before, I got her a size 8. They seem to fit her well (again, hard to tell…I just have to go by look/comparison to her existing shoes and also watching her move around in them). It’s very hard to find serious hiking shoes in small sizes, but I think these are great despite the downsides I listed. Both my kids hike miles each week over lots of different terrain and do a ton of rock climbing and jumping, and they seem very comfortable and able to move the ways they want to in these.
A Critical Review: The boots we received differ from the image. We bought them for our son who likes a velcro strap. The boys we received do not have the strap. They seem to be a different leather material as well.

A Critical Review: I HATE/LOVE these boots. They are a great design and the sole of the shoe is better than most brand name shoes. However DO NOT buy these shoes if you want them to stay on your kids feet. We have had the shoes 4 months and only 2 months the velcro worked. Then it started coming off. So we bought more velcro and tried to sew it…as you can see in the picture (quite ugly)….and we are not shoe makers so it’s not successful. I did try to look for an email address to contact the company but could not find one. I am so disappointed. It’s sad that these will end up in a landfill when they have so much more life. So bummed, and my son loves them. Don’t waste your money!!

A Critical Review: My kids have been wearing keen hiking boots for years. In most cases they have been of great quality and have lasted a long time, through a lot of abuse and mud. However, this pair has thrown me off. The strap broke the first day it arrive, right out of the box. I sewed it up and my son started wearing them. Now after 1 month of use, the sole is falling off and the same strap broke again. I don’t know if we just had bad luck with this one pair that is falling apart after about 30 days of use, or if the quality has fallen dramatically.

The boots are rugged and strong on the outside for walking and climbing but the inside of the boot is so soft and comfortable for his feet. My 9yo says its comfortable and not heavy at all to wear all day at school I think he is right becuase when you hold it in your hand it is quite light. it is not lined either .. I bought it as an alternate to wear when its really cold outside and sneaker just wont do . But its not really snow boot day either . I ordered it through prime received it as expected in two days that was Friday so my kid wore it to school on Monday and Tuesday . Today is Wednesday and as we were walking towards school this morning I saw the shoe all peeled from the front where the toes are. I understand its not a sports shoe so its not meant to hold up if worn during hard playing like soccer , kicking etc. and I know this pair wasn’t put through it. first day it was worn completely inside the school building and second day my kids played outside in the recess but regular running around throwing balls. no kicking no soccer . A 5-Star Review: These were the go to fall hikers for my grandson, wore them everyday. I’ve just purchased the exact hiker in his bigger shoe size for this year. Purchased a wide width, great with heavier sox.
A Critical Review: My feelings are mixed. They seem to fit my wide footed 2.5 year old well enough, and he seems to be less clumsy in them than other shoes, but he doesn’t seemed thrilled about them at all. He tries to refuse them in fact. Could just be that he isn’t fond of the high top, but he has poor ankle stability so that might be why they improve his stride and balance. I wish I knew if they were truly uncomfortable, but he’s too young to really say and they don’t leave any evidence of discomfort.
My main gripe is that one of the pieces of fabric that holds the metal thing for the laces came loose today so the bungee lace is no longer attached there. I don’t see any evidence that it was sewn on, so I assume it’s glue and it just came loose. I don’t think it will affect the functionality of the shoe much, but I expected better quality from Merrell.

She was able to put them on even though they are tall, even when they were new and not worn in yet. They kept her feet toasty warm, and most importantly dry, even through huge puddles!
A Critical Review: I wanted to love these boots for my active boy, but they are not even close to waterproof. Water goes right through them on the first wearing. . . . I expected more from this brand (especially given the price point.)

A 5-Star Review: I picked this up recently I’ve wore them daily for a week now, both in casual situations and out in the woods on both flat and steep terrain. They have excellent grip in mud loose dirt and wet dirt they dig in that was one of the reasons i took a stab at them. When i ordered was not a single review so i took a chance, as i say many before my review did.
Long term durability this what most important right? For that i cannot say yet. I’ve looked over it’s construction it seems to have all right details but even looks can deceive so time will tell right? When the time comes I will update my review on regards based on durability say maybe 6 months from now. They are made in china that shouldn’t be surprising to anyone at this point in time lol. Only durability issues i was seeing or having seems few bits of the sowing wanted to fray my advice take a bic lighter (just an example what i meant any lighter be fine) melt them before they get out of hand and undo in the future. It could be a future problem I will keep my eyes on it.
Walking in them is very comfy I felt like I was walking on clouds which makes since as they have an EVA insole, which isn’t glued in. Meaning long as the boot holds up you can buy replacement EVA insoles for them from other manufacturers. The pair I got even came with a packet that had 2 extra laces so even get back ups if you ever need them.
The waterproofing I have not tested, I would say it would be fine as the tongue is a complete wrap with no opening but over an ankle deep of water and they going to flood makes sense I’m sure?
I got the black/gray pair they are a little warm on the feet, but i expected that most black clothing is little warmer than light colors.
The boot is incredible light, as light as a pair of RND1 basket ball sneakers i have, from the looks of them you wouldn’t think that, but they really are may even be slightly lighter than them.
The boots are both easy to put on and take off really easy i was really happy with that. For poison oak/ivy reasons lol.
I recommend relacing these after you get them if you like a foot hugging snug feel and tightness. Out of the box lacing little loser than I preferred, but not a flaw that is a personal preference.
After my relacing of the boot the snug feeling worked great stayed snug all day long laces never stretched or let up on it.
These are not wides i know some men even women wear wide boots and shoes there is no option at the time i bought for a wide foot so keep that in mind before you buy these just made for an avg sized foot in width. my foot at widest point is about 4 inches wide any wider i’d not got my foot in them comfortably.
Now this be a rule of thumb my dad taught me on buying shoes, these are pretty much shoes with a hiking boot tread.
if you wear a size 10 go with a 10 1/2. i wear 10.5 or wore a 10.5 in my past before he told me this rule of thumb. Now i wear a 11 by following his guidance and it was some great advice from a wise man. The advice makes things feel much better and more comfortable in the short & long terms. This is just general advice when buying any shoe be it online or in a store in person.

After about 15 days part of the sole on inner side left rear heel started coming lose for no reason, but i took bottle of guerilla glue and I’ve had no issues since. I filled that hole full with it its been glued since. Still wearing them daily that has been the only serious issue i had with these. So take note, buy a bottle guerilla glue when you buy these lol. I’ve wore them daily since i bought them thats been the only serious problem. Made in china though and it shows least it did for me so i’m dropping a star i think thats fair no one should have to glue their shoe back together after 15 days of daily use. I’d go back to 3 but that would be unfair as i’m still wearing them daily. NORTIV 8 should partner with guerilla glue as they work well together.
A Critical Review: The sizing was spot on but these boots were just completely uncomfortable. I wore them on a trip to Europe and two weeks into the trip I found a store that carried my size of better quality shoes and immediately bought new ones. There has been a homeless guy outside the hotel I was staying at so I offered him these shoes since I didn’t like them. They were actually his size too. He took them and put them on but the next day I went outside he wasn’t wearing them anymore and they were sitting beside him. I asked him what happened and even a homeless guy with busted up old shoes couldn’t wear them. He said they were just too uncomfortable. That’s pretty bad when someone desperate for shoes won’t even wear them.

A Critical Review: The so called hiking boot is not meant for real hiking. The outsoles (bottom of shoe) do not have a complete layer of semi-hard rubber, only around edges (black part). The rest of the outsole is just exposed midsole material, which is the soft white foam that would probably get easily damaged and wouldn’t survive too long against hiking trails with sharp rocks, sticks, branches, stickers, etc. The shoe seems like decent quality for price , and probably would be a comfortable boot/sneaker for normal use. Giving the boots 3/5 stars because it shouldn’t be advertised as a hiking boot due to the issue with the outsoles.

A 5-Star Review: Bought these for my 10 year old son. He absolutely loved them. We went on an early spring 3 day 2 night camping/hiking trip and it ranged from the low 30s at night to mid 60s during the day. He stayed warm and dry in them and raved the entire trip about how comfortable they were. He did have an adequate hiking sock for this and that makes a world of difference as well. We put just over 15 miles on these boots over the 3 days. He generally wears a size 5 but is growing quickly. With the heavy sock we opted to buy a size 6. They fit well and he had no rubbing issues. Hoping to get at least a full season, maybe two out of them but hard telling as fast as kids grow. We had no lace or eyelet issues as mentioned in some of the other reviews. Time will tell but as of right now, I am very happy with the purchase.
A Critical Review: These boots were great, they fit as expected, are water resistant, and kept my sons feet warm. However, we were looking for a long term product, something that could last my son though this next year of Boy Scout Camp outs. They did not last this winter. We got them Oct 21st, by December the shoe laces started to shred and chunks have fallen off. Then by late Jan the sole of the right shoe started to fall off.
So, if you’re looking for something to last a few months, keep the kid warm, and are water resistant than this boot would get 5 stars. If you need a product that will last your kid until next season at least, this might not be the boot you’re looking for.

A 5-Star Review: I have a pair of women’s Merrell and they feel more cushioned. This particular boys set does not have good arch support and the area above your achilles will be bruised if you hike on a downward slope for 3-4 miles. Thankfully, I had to pairs of hiking boots with me and was able to change shoes the following day to allow time for healing. I still think it’s worth the price, but definitely not any more than that.
A Critical Review: These looked amazing but in less than a week my 5 year old wore them out. The rubber that goes up the toes came unglued and the material looked like they’d been worn for a year! I’m shocked since I thought this was a reputable brand.

A Critical Review: We bought these which after we’ve worn them awhile I would not even pay that again. They’re cute but the shoe laces do not stay tied and they started falling apart pretty quick. Upon arrival I noticed some shotty glue work. We also had a pair of wonder nation boots from Walmart and those have held up significantly better than these. Like have very little wear on them.

A 5-Star Review: I paid for these hiking boots. My 4yo wore them while we explored Mt. Rainier in Aug 2022. They did the job, look great, and I saved money by not buying the big name brands. A Critical Review: Made for children and the outdoors, they should be able to last more than 10 minutes. The seam of the elastic “laces” to the shoe was broke the first time our daughter put them on. Not durable but luckily the Velcro could keep them on her feet.

A Critical Review: My son wears a 5.5 and I wear a ladies 7.5 so our feet are the same size. I ordered these in a 6 to give him a little wiggle room to grow so they would last 6months. He said they got fine and I tried them on and my big toe hit the front of the boot sockless. My ladies merrell hiking shoes are a 7.5 and I have plenty of wiggle room for thick wool socks. Not sure if this pair was off or they run small but I returned to get him a bigger size so he doesn’t outgrow in a month. Overall good quality and comfortable

A 5-Star Review: Great PNW school shoe/rain boots alternative! In an effort to cut down on the number of shoes needed for my kids, I tried these waterproof boots. My boys wore them on a very rainy day with dry feet and even said that they did fine for basketball at recess even with the heal thing. No complaints on comfort, which is a small miracle as both my boys have totally different tastes in shoe comfort! Also to note, one of my boys wears an ankle brace with wrap around strapping that can be bulky and it fit fine in these boots so they are able to accommodate a pretty thick ankle and also tighten for a more narrow one. Great price. So far, so good.
A Critical Review: They look like really nice boots and seem well constructed. However they are absolutely NOT waterproof! We finally tested them in water and my son just stepped in a puddle and his whole boot and sock inside was soaked. I bought these for winter and the snow and his first step through a puddle they can’t handle?? Very sad about this! I have twins and bough them both a pair so that sucks. They will be used for every day hiking but definitely will not work for snow.

A Critical Review: Do not buy these if you are going to use them for actual hiking. They are cute, and that is it. I can’t even tell you that they would survive a semester of 3rd grade.
We bought theses because we are starting to spend a lot of time outdoors and wanted a shoe that would support our daughter for light terrain with mix of hot dry and cold wet. The description and reviews led us to believe this was a good choice.
Comfort is adequate and sizing was good enough that she was able to wear them with a variety of insulation combinations.
She is a puddle hunter and can find one in the desert. They kept her feet dry and comfortable.
First trip out was a light flat 2 mile loop with good mix of grass, gravel, with touches of mud and sharp rock. No problems.
Second trip out was supposed to be a 5 mile with a more rugged, less traveled trail and less than half way in she started complaining about the laces being loose. Further inspection we discovered that the lace hardware had detached from the boot which made the one too loose to wear effectively.
We were able to get it cinched enough to make it out but needless to say it was not very pleasant for her.
Conclusion:
After testing and reviewing dozens of pairs of boys hiking boots, we’ve concluded that the KEEN Kootenay II WP Boots are the best overall. They’re comfortable, durable, and provide good traction and support.
