Malampuzha, a little township on the foothills of the Western Ghats takes its name from the River Malampuzha. Nurtured by this tributary of Kerala’s longest river, the Bharathapuzha, Malampuzha is a lush green town is a major tourist attraction for its trekking trails and the large irrigation dam. Around the reservoir of the dam are beautiful gardens and amusement parks. Boating facilities are available on the lake. Other attractions in the Malampuzha garden are the beautiful rock garden, the fish-shaped aquarium, the snake park, the ropeway which takes you on an aerial tour of the park, and the gigantic Yakshi (an enchantress) sculptured by Kanai Kunhiraman, a renowned sculptor of Kerala.

The Silent Valley National Park with an area of 237. 52 sq km is located in the Northeastern corner of Palakkad district. It rises abruptly to the Nilgiri Plateau in the North and overlooks the plains of Mannarkkad in the South. Extremely fragile, a unique preserve of tropical evergreen rain forests which is a veritable nursery of flora and fauna, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. The core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is the Silent Valley National Park. Despite its name, the Silent Valley (the clamour of Cicadas is conspicuously absent here) is a rich storehouse of biodiversity. It is a true Garden of Eden for students of life sciences, professional scientists and field biologists.

Silent Valley National Park is full of surprises. One can become a part of a number of activities here. Jeep safari is the most sorted out things to do in Silent Valley National Park. Apart from this, the sanctuary houses a four-storey watch tower. Visitors are allowed to climb up the tower. The view from the tower is mesmerizing, as one can see only the vast expanse of lush greenery on all sides including the path of River Kunti. Trekking is yet another activity to do in this forest area. By trekking a little far from the watch tower, one reaches a swinging bridge over the Kunti River from where one can easily see tortoise resting on the banks of the river.

The Palakkad Fort , also known as Tipu’s Fort , stands in the heart of Palakkad town. One of the well preserved forts in south India, Tipu’s Fort was constructed in 1766 AD and is today a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. The sober majesty of the laterite walls of the fort reminds one of the old tales of valour and courage.

Dhoni hills in Palakkad is popular picnic spot with a small and beautiful waterfall. It takes a three hours trek from the base of the Dhoni hills to reach this reserve forest area. You have to walk 4 km from the bottom of the hill to reach the waterfalls. The roads are not tarred, and one can see water flowing down between the rocks on the way up. No restrictions for carrying food to the top. Upon reaching the top, one can see the lovely view of the waterfalls and enjoy a bath in the cold waters. With a climb up the rocks one can feel the beauty of the jungles and it is said to have leopards, elephants and so. However, encountering them is rare.

Kalpathy Temple( Sri Visalakshi Sametha Sri Viswanatha Swamy temple ) is a very old attraction of Palakkad. Heritage Gramam (village) attractive temples. One has to visit this Gramam at least once if you are happens to be in Palakkad. This village is famous for its brahmin traditional agraharas (House) and for the Ratholsavam ( Chariot pulling ) one of the famous festival in Kerala held in the month of November every year.

Dhoni waterfall is located on top of Dhoni hills, near Palakkad town. In comparison to Malampuzha dam which is hailed as a major local tourist spot, Dhoni waterfall, located just 5 kilometres away, is relatively less known. Access to the waterfalls requires a 3 hour trek to the top of Dhoni hills through the forest. This major restrictive factor cuts down visitor numbers to a great extent. Although the waterfall itself is rather small, refreshingly beautiful surroundings make up for it. Water from here ultimately feeds Malampuzha Dam. Enjoying the scenic environment of Dhoni hills and a great trek are the upshots of visiting this Kerala waterfall.

The Jain temple is situated at Jainimedu, about six km from Palakkad. It is a temple with a history of more than 1500 years and is believed to have been built by two diamond merchants from Karnataka. The first Jain settlers here were Shettys and they named the place Jainimedu.
