                        “Calm and quiet place. We went there as family. My 4yr old and 6yr old son were able to complete the trek. There is a small waterfall at the end of the trek. Great for one day outing with family!!!”

                        “Beautiful place. A must visit if you are in Palakkad. It is an one hour trek from the bottom of the hill to the Dhoni falls (Around 4 to 4.5 km). Roads are made of gravel. You need to pay Rs.20 to the forest department per person. Time just runs by as you start to walk and there are lot of shortcuts. Water is absolutely tasty and pure on the falls. If you are planning to swim, beware of the falls. There has been few incidents in the recent past. Make sure you know to swim as there is a deep trench. Would come again! :)”

                            Located on the banks of the Kalpathy river in Palakkad is the Kalpathy Temple or the Viswanatha Swamy Temple. It is known as the Kundukovil by the natives, dedicated for the worship of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. The idol of Lord Subrahmany is surrounded by his consorts Valli and Devyani. An interesting feature of the Dakshina Kashi Temple is that the idols of the presiding deities are attached to the pedestals by a mixture of 8 elements – ashtabandham. The annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam or Chariot Festival is celebrated here in the month of November. It draws ardent devotees who throng the temple premises to see the beautifully coloured chariots drawn through the streets. The temple is renowned for the 7 day rath yatra, a spiritual trip for all pilgrims seeking some quiet and peace.

                            One of the few places in Kerala where Jainism still prospers is the Jainimedu Jain Temple in Jainimedu. The temple portrays the facets of Jain culture and traditional aspects. Located along the wet hillside slopes of Palakkad, it is believed that the temple was built by a family of diamond traders 500 years back. Built on a vast expanse of land, it exhibits a fine example of Kerala architecture. The temple has long granite walls displaying pictures and carvings of Jain spiritualism. The monument has images of Jain Thirthankaras, giving a vibrant backdrop. An interesting feature is the Jain House next to the temple, where the famous poet Kumaranashan composed the poem Veenapoovu or the ‘fallen flower’. One of the rarest temples of Kerala, it is solely dedicated to Jainism.
