Kaal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain

Bhairav Mandir -the Kaal Bhairav temple- is located in Ujjain. It is dedicated to the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with annihilation. Kaal Kal Bhairav is a gatekeeper of lord Shiva and is worshipped by Hindus.

Temple is located on the banks of the River Kshipra that is dedicated to the worship of Kal Bhairav, the chief of the eight Bhairavas (Lord Shiva) described in Saivite tradition. The Kaal Bhairav temple is similar to the one in Kashi, The kaal Bhairav is the guardian deity of the city. Here, liquor ‘madya’ is offered as ‘chadhawa’ to Bhairava to invoke blessing, it is one of the tantric ritual offerings known as Panchamkara. The devotees carry bottles of alcohol with them to offer to the deity. The temple is built in a fortress like structure and is said to be constructed by Marathas.
