Gir National Park

Gir is one of India’s oldest sanctuaries, and is synonymous with the majestic Asiatic lion (Panthera Leo persica). The only place in India to see this animal. This park can take legitimate pride in saving an endangered species by providing it a more secured habitat. The Gir ecosystem falls in Biogeography Zone-4 (the semi arid) and Biogeography Province 4-B. Gujarat Rajwara is the last remaining abode of the Asiatic Lion, Panthera Leo persica.

"I just read about the jailing of three Gir (asiatic) lions by the authorities for the killing of 6 people in the 6 months prior. I have always been fascinated by India's peoples' attitude of tolerance of their wildlife. How different to western attitudes when men and wildlife interaction results in tragedy. Indians, have a wonderful ability and culture to share the earth with other creatures. India has resurrected the Asian lion, the tiger and so many other wild creatures that have been exterminated everywhere else on Earth. A visit to the Gir sanctuary is definitely on my "to do" list before I die. Thank you India for protecting wildlife so generously."

"we went to devalia safari park, which is an extension but very small part of gir forest. it was not worth it, travelling all the way to gujarat just for a short trip. still craving to visit actual gir forest and meet lots of lion friends :-)"

"The Lion Safari is reasonably priced, but the facilities that they provide are ridiculous. Open jeeps in the forests of Gir sound exciting, but the dust laden journey is simply pathetic. Dress up accordingly as you'll end up as if you just drove through a dust storm. Early Mornings are the best time to spot Lions. There are fixed routes on which the drivers and guides drive. You will find plenty of deer/birds of prey/wild boars on the way. There are crocodiles near the lake area and if you are lucky, you might see Lions on the way. There are trackers who are well aware of the locations of the several hundred lions at Gir, however your driver will NOT drive you out of the fixed route to a lion spotting, if there is one. Unlike other Safaris in the world, where the Guides are keen to find Lions, this is an anticlimatic trip, where Guides/Drivers are too busy replacing the tobacco in their mouths, instead of enthusiastically trying to spot Lions. We had two Safaris and managed to spot 1 Male Lion on our second trip as we managed to get an insider official with us on the trip. He already had the information of a Lion sighting and directly drove us to the site, which is so very convenient rather than spending 3 hours driving through a dust storm pretending to find Lions. I would recommend people to do the same. Use any means necessary to convince the Guide/Driver to find out where the Lion is spotted and head to that area. Overall, the experience was quite a sham, but it was excellent to witness a Lion up close from an open jeep."

"Only place in India to spot lions (wild not tamed). Customer service is just amazing, guides are well trained and do their best to help you spot every animal. Been to several other national parks and the perception was that guides will fool you with foot prints and other stories of animals. But not here, we were able to spot 3 lions but let me remind everyone that there is no guarantee of lion spotting. These jungle King can be anywhere they want. Safari is reasonably priced, they charge INR 1500 for the vehicle, which can accommodate 6 people and additional INR 800 for permit to enter the park. So in total INR 2300 for 6 people. Resorts near the park are equally good, so you do not have to worry about stay. Good food, good services, what else can we ask for......... Thoroughly enjoyed our stay,"
