                        “Jahaj Mahal is the centre of attraction of all the magnificent monuments in Mandu. It was primarily built as a ‘harem’ to keep the many queens of the the Mandav King in good humour amidst the hot climate of Mandav or Mandu. The palace itself is made in the shape of a ship or jahaj and has water bodies all around and thus the name Jahaj Mahal or the ship palace. Ancient architecture can be seen at its best here. It is an archaeological India site and there is an entry ticket. It is recommended to the visit Jahaj Mahal and Hindola Mahal first once you land in Mandu and then continue south seeing Hosang shah tomb,Jami Masjid, Darya Khan Tomb, Ahilya fort, Boat club etc culminating the tour at the Rani Roopmati palace, before falling back. If a foodie, do try locally made ‘panni’ in one of the shacks just outside the Jahaj Mahal or at the local bus stop. Order in advance as it takes and hour to prepare and not many keep them ready. Night stay is ideal in one of the two MP Tourism resorts. Do take a guide at the entrance of the Jahaj Mahal itself, if not carrying a good guide book. (negotiate well). Happy Viewing. Bon Chance.”

                            Reputed to be India’s oldest marble building, this imposing tomb is crowned with a crescent thought to have been imported from Persia or Mesopotamia. Inside, light filters into the echoing dome through stone jalis (carved lattice screens), intended to cast an appropriately subdued light on the tombs. The tomb was constructed in 1435 and depicts typical Hindu influences. It is said that Shah Jahan sent his architects to study this double-domed structure before constructing Taj Mahal.

                            Champa Baoli is an interesting step-well on the north edge of the tank situated there( Jahaj Mahal). It was a popular hot-weather retreat and featured cool wells and bathrooms. It is situated on the north shore of the lake. The Champa Baoli is known so as the water is said to have smelt like the champa flower. A tower on the roof caught the cool breeze, which was channeled to the room below. A few towers had a single opening facing one direction while others were multi-directional with openings on more than one side to catch the breezes. All had exit vents to expel the hot air.
