The Tura Hill is a magnificent hill at a height of 2860 feet, towards the east of Tura. The Hill provides a beautiful view of the Tura town it overlooks, and is a major attraction for the tourists visiting Meghalaya. The Hill is declared as a reserve forest, housing its own observatory, Cinchona plantations, and a bungalow for tourists to stay in. The Peak of the Hill offers singularly spectacular view of the Brahmaputra valley, and the great golden plains of Bangladesh. A foot-track serves as the route for the tourists to reach the Tura Peak, which was built by the British during the colonial rule. Incidentally, it is widely believed that prior to British occupancy, the Hill was known as ‘Dura’, but due to British mispronunciation of local dialect, they named the hill as Tura, a name which continues to this day. The Tura Hill is also revered by many locals, as they believe that the Hill provides a sacred shelter to the Gods.
